6 Speech-to-Text Transcription Apps and Services

For years, voice transcription technology has been available but terrible. Unless you talked like a robot, the typed result looked nothing like what you said. Now there’s a new round of services for those who are better at talking with your mouth rather than your thumbs, and they’ve gotten a lot better. Here are our six faves.

Dragon Dictation (iPhone)

This new transcription app has been slobberingly adored by Mashable, The New York Times, and the rest of the web. It’s free for a limited time only, and does a mighty fine job. Once you’ve spoken, you can save the text in an email, SMS or onto your clipboard. The basic design is very user-friendly, and the price is right.

QuickVoice (iPhone)

This one costs $0.99 and doesn’t let you email your notes out of your iPhone, but it does have a handy “pause” feature that allows you to take a little break without having to start a new file.

MyCaption (Blackberry)

This is a useful app for the Blackberry, but don’t let the $1.99 download price fool you. They have a slate of complicated and expensive plans for emailing the transcriptions out of your device that should make you wary.

The Android Market has a loooong way to go, but the app offerings are improving every day. As of today, here are my personal game picks for Android devices. Head over to the Android Market on your device to purchase/acquire.

Aevum Obscurum

Risk- like game that takes you back to medieval times to fight over the control of Europa. This turb-by-turn game will be great relaxation for all strategy fans out there.

You get 30-50 empires to choose from and start conquer the whole map. The best think is that you can try this game for free and if you want more action you can purchase it for $ 4.99 USD

Radiant

Radiant fills the void that Space Invaders left behind. It’s a classic old-school gaming experience – Asteroids meets Space Invaders – but features gorgeously bright graphics.

The aliens are coming and you are Max Blaster, last line of defense to save the planet.

Game play is challenging and the storyline is fun. Upgrade weapons and enhance your ship as you defeat bosses at each level.

The game gives the player many control options. Use the touchscreen, trackball or 1 and 0 buttons to move your ship.

A great game to kill some time when you’re waiting in line. The Lite version is free and the paid version will set you back $2.40USD.

Rock On! 9 Free Music Websites

For years I have been a Rhapsody subscriber. The streaming music service is well worth every penny, as I relish the fact that I can play just about any song at any time. But I can understand young music lovers who do not wish to pay to hear the tunes they seek. That’s where these great free services come in.

PANDORA

music_pandora

It’s like they know me! Enter the name of a band, song or genre , and Pandora’s intuitive system will play tunes that have similar musical qualities to your selection.

Registering entitles you to 100 “stations” and the ability to bookmark songs or people. Album art and a blurb about the band accompanies each track.

The recently launched Pandora One offers higher audio quality, a five-hour timeout period (if you don’t interact with Pandora, the system will auto-pause) and no ads for $36 a year. The free version peppers in audio and video ads, and while they definitely interrupt the flow, they are certainly not deal breakers. Read more

Everyone already knows that when it comes to building a successful blog or Website, content is king. Thanks in part to a growing number of easy-to-install widgets, you can populate your online home with a variety of interesting material that isn’t necessarily created by you. Or better yet, create your own XML feed and present your information in a fresh and exciting way. Here are several free Websites that allow you to create or pull widgets.

Widgetbox

All you need to create a widget is a feed of content. This can be pulled from your blog, YouTube, Flickr, twitter and others.

A Blidget allows you to turn your blog into an instant widget that can be installed by other Website owners. For example, if you have a blog on career advice, you can create a Blidget and hope that other employment-related Websites will display your content.

There are thousands of widgets available for installation. These can be found via search or by Tab.

A Pro account, which costs only a few cents a day, gives the widget creator greater control. You can add logos, incorporate tabs and remove the WidgetBox identifier from the bottom of the widget. Read more
