TechCrunch Columnist Paul Carr, Wine Library TV Host Gary Vaynerchuk Spar in Part Two of The Webby Debates

Part two of The Webby Debates, hosted on CNNMoney.com and moderated by that site’s Laurie Segall, featured TechCrunch columnist Paul Carr — who quit Facebook and Twitter in August — discussing the future of social media with Wine Library TV host Gary Vaynerchuk.

At one point in the conversation, they debated how easy or difficult it is to refute a lie once it is shared via social media and blogs, leading to this exchange (video below):

Carr: No, it becomes Obama says that the trip to India didn’t cost $200 million, but …

Vaynerchuk: Well, why do lies … come on.

Carr: … but all these people do say. It’s opinion.

Vaynerchuk: Hold on a minute. If there’s too much noise, why can a lie itself not have … get more attention than the rebuttal itself?

Carr: Because if a lie is seductive enough, and the lie is sordid enough, then that’s much more interesting than someone saying …

Vaynerchuk: I promise you if someone tries to smear the shit out of me that I will fully use social 24, 7, 365, to rebuttal, and it will work.

Carr: But people trust you. People come to it with an idea of what Gary Vaynerchuk is.

Vaynerchuk: They trust me because I … and by the way …

Carr: If you become known as the guy who was accused of a crime on Twitter, and that’s all people know of you, good luck rebutting it, because you’re that guy.

Gary Vaynerchuck, social media maven and wine connoisseur, has just signed on to host the weekly call-in show “Wine & Web with Gary Vaynerchuk” on Sirius Radio. As part of the then avant garde video blogging elite, Vaynerchuck’s video podcast Wine Library TV quickly saw him shoot to online fame in 2006. This new radio program will undoubtedly build his cache with wine lovers and social media followers alike, as these will continue to be the two main topics of conversation for this social web star.

Arrange Your Meetings And Find New Friends With MeetingWave

I was watching Gary Vaynerchuk Web 2.0 Keynote in NYC when I received invitation to check out this new site called MeetingWave – a social network/tool dedicated to help people connect offline.

Why I’m mentioning Gary? No doubt he’s an absolutely crazy guy (in a positive way) with many interesting ideas and thoughts. So, for example, one of his goals is to meet every people on earth – can you imagine? I’m also pretty sure that with his energy he will achieve his goal but that can be much more easier using MeetingWave which allows you to arrange offline meetings anywhere you are.

The idea behind this startup is pretty clear – if you have some business trip and you are stuck in some hotel with nothing else to do other tahn watch TV you can go out and meet some people to talk about stuff that is interesting for you. On the other hand if you are bored sitting home you can host some meetings in your favorite cafe or bar. MeetingWave allows you to do taht pretty easaly and it will take you just couple minutes to find out the possibilities of the site. So, I will not waste your time trying to list them here – go and check out MeetingWave for yourself!

O, I almost forgot it has Facebook and Bebo apps too!

p.s. If you are in Riga give me a quick note – I would be happy to meet you, I know some cool places

Gary Vaynerchuk Releases Book, Becomes a Hit on Amazon

My really good friend Gary Vaynerchuk made big announcement today: his book has gone for sale on Amazon. It is now available for pre-order and has hit the top 300 books on Amazon. The goal? To hit the Top 100. If anybody can get their book to the top 100, Gary Vaynerchuk can and it makes a great case study for the impact of social media. The best part is that the book only costs $13.57.

If you want to get an early copy go grab it on Amazon. The most amazing part is just through his announcement on his show today, the book has reached the top 300 on Amazon. I have no idea how good the book is but given Gary’s enthusiasm about wine I can guarantee you that a lot of passion went into the writing of it.

Gary is a great find of mine so I had to help him out and “link it up”. If you don’t know much about Gary then you need to check out his show Winelibrary TV as well as his personal blog Gary Vaynerchuk. Gary is one of the most passionate people I know and is a true symbol of social media self-promotion. Check out his video below if you don’t know much about him.

Social Media Brings Out the Truth in You

Yesterday, Gary Vaynerchuk posted one of his daily thoughts on life. The primary argument that Gary makes is that good will defeat evil through social media and the internet. I couldn’t agree more. While you can create a false image of yourself online, eventually you will be exposed for who you are. Then again, I believe that people will always be exposed eventually because in my world, the truth always wins.

You may be asking, “what about those that don’t use social media?” Every member of the next generation is using social media and the world will soon be completely connected. Am I scared? Well I’m concerned if the government tries to take over any of these organizations but given that the internet provides true democracy, I don’t see that happening in this country anytime soon (at least I hope not).

Being connected all the time and making your life public forces you to be a good person. You can’t run and hide. Instead, embrace the fact that you are good and you will be rewarded. If you aren’t good at heart you are going to be eventually exposed. It is going to become increasingly difficult to outsmart the system because it is becoming engrained within us. Watch Gary’s video to learn more. Do you agree?

The New York Times is completely accurate aside from a few blogs that are generating relatively significant revenue.

There’s not as much money in building a blog for most people because you need to generate a substantial amount of traffic before it makes a lot of money. This morning while getting ready for the day I realized that the real value is in the community. Gary Vaynerchuk is the person I always use as an example of someone that has successfully built a community. He also knows that building the community will reward you greatly. Check out his video:

So often I simply write content but I’ve realized that the real value is in building the community and providing them with a platform for discussion. I’ll be working on that for Social Times. If you own the platform for the community, there are many other things you can do to add value and generate revenue. The secret is not in the media but instead in leveraging the media to build a community.
