Newspapers Begin Erecting Paywalls in Response to Google One Pass

Google’s announcement Wednesday of its Google One Pass payment system for content led two newspaper owners to begin laying the foundations for paywalls.

Media General will use Google One Pass to charge for online content from its Richmond Times-Dispatch, while Rust Communications will deploy that strategy at one of its 19 daily and 30 weekly newspapers next month, adding two more soon thereafter, paidContent reported.

Raymond Kozakewicz, a spokesman for Media General, told paidContent the Times-Dispatch would have a paywall within three months and, after assessing its performance under the Google One Pass system, the company would consider similar measures at its other newspapers. He did not specify costs or details on how the paywall would work.

And Rust publisher Jon Rust told paidContent his company will use a “metered approach,” as well as testing users paying per story.

Google’s Answer to Apple: Google One Pass

Google returned Apple’s serve from Tuesday, except that Apple has the dominant tablet behind its serve in the iPad, while Google is relying on recently introduced Android devices.

Chairman Eric Schmidt introduced Google One Pass, its answer to the App Store subscription model announced by Apple Tuesday.

The two major differences: Google will keep 10 percent of revenue from sales, as opposed to 30 percent for Apple; and, as reported by TechCrunch, information collected by Google will be shared with publishers, unlike Apple.
