In the run up to the holidays, Google has been doing a lot of work to improve their Google Plus social network. Just a week ago we had a slew of Google Plus Hangout improvements, and now we’ve got updates for the notifications and pages features. A lot of people feel Google Plus has already bit the dust, but I think they may have some surprises in store for us in 2012.

Google has released plans to introduce “layers” of social networking features into their various products later this year. Eric Schmidt, Google CEO, announced the plans at the Zeitgeist conference yesterday, and also announced that this is not anything remotely like a Facebook-killer or Ping-star-destroyer. It’s about bringing social features in to products that already exist. We take a look at what exactly these layers could possibly be after the jump.
