The team behind barcode scanning app ShopSavvy, a creation of mobile app startup Big in Japan, is predicting a boom for mobile barcode scanning apps this holiday season.
The Texas-based company expects around 60 million uses of its barcode technology on the Black Friday weekend, traditionally the biggest shopping day of the year. ShopSavvy has its own app, and its technology also powers apps for Sam’s Club, Consumer Reports, PriceGrabber, FastMall (a mall navigation app) and CNET.
Mobile barcode scanners let customers search for projects on the Web by scanning barcodes with the cameras on phones such as Apple’s iPhone, Android-powered devices, and Nokia smart phones. Most provide shopping search results so customers can find the best available price from an online vendor.
“In a typical month, ShopSavvy users conduct between 30 and 50 million scans; this month, we expect that to be closer to 120 million scans, with more than half of those coming over Black Friday weekend,” said Alexander Muse, co-creator of ShopSavvy in a statement.
ShopSavvy is not alone when it comes to bar code scanning apps. Competitors include RedLaser, which was purchased by eBay back in June, and Google, which lets users scan bar codes with its Google Mobile app.
According to ShopSavvy, its app has pulled in more than 6.5 million users since it’s launch in 2008.

This year’s winner spent 5 tireless days developing something extraordinary. While it isn’t exactly breaking news, this robot, developed by Tami Ka, is pretty incredible. The robot is inspired by the Crazy Planets robot. Honestly, this robot is something I’d expect to find in Make magazine with the incredible to detail. Check out the photos of below of Tami’s development of the robot.
