To help ensure kids’ Internet safety, parents need to know how to educate their children about staying safe online and manage their kids’ Internet experiences. And although the task may sound challenging, there are some websites that offer some simple solutions or tips that every family can use to help make their kids’ online experiences safe ones.
This week, AOL unleashed a new tool to help parents sleep at night, a tool called SafeSocial that protects kids on the internet. SafeSocial grants access to key pieces of information about kids’ internet accounts, social media friends, photos and posts with key words that respond to danger. A signature of the tool seems to be the fact that kids have to agree to their parents’ use of SafeSocial. In other words, SafeSocial is less like spying than say, supervising with permission. Surveying 2,800 kids and more than 7,000 adults in 14 countries about their online lives and experiences, The Norton Online Family Report finds over six in 10 kids have had negative online experiences – from exposure to nudity and violence to having a stranger try to meet them in real life. But nearly half of the kids, aged eight to 17, think they are more careful online than their parents, with 20 percent saying their parents have “no idea” what they are doing online.
