Apple is aggressively pushing for iOS 7 adoption, this time, by requiring developers to optimized apps for iOS 7 as early as February 1.
Starting February 1, new apps and app updates submitted to the App Store must be built with the latest version of Xcode 5 and must be optimized for iOS 7. Learn more about preparing your apps by reviewing the iOS Human Interface Guidelines.
While the new requirement does mention visual guidelines, apps must also be built using Apple’s new Xcode 5, which could mean a lot more work than tweaking fonts or lines. Read more
While designers are bemoaning the aesthetic merits of Apple’s new operating system, some users are experiencing a different kind of upheaval. The new animation and parallax scrolling is making users sick, literally.
In a pair of 5-4 decisions, the Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled in favor of same-sex couples in two major cases, effectively allowing federal benefits for gay couples and clearing the way for same-sex marriages in the state of California. Among progressive Silicon Valley tech companies, the reaction was incredibly positive.
The votes are still inconclusive on Twitter, but over 46,000 users on Polar’s polling app have made a clear decision: the new Apple icons are preferable. As reported by Techcrunch, users are likely to prefer the new logos by a factor of two to one:
Those numbers represent the cumulative totals for all votes gathered on individual iOS 7 icons by the service since their unveiling at WWDC, and the data reveals that not only do people tend to prefer the iOS 7 versions overall, but they strongly prefer them in most cases. The redesigned Phone icon, for instance, garnered 80 percent pro-votes, with just 20 percent preferring the older design, and the Messages app icon was preferred by 84 percent of respondents, vs. just 16 percent for the older edition.
Since the poll is only available to users of Polar, it’s hardly scientific. However, the numbers are not misleading, the new icons are more likable for most. What do you think?
Apple’s new icons for iOS are worth examining as a minor, yet indicative nature of the design overhaul for iOS 7. Whether you like the new look or not, the changes are coming and they are definitely worth noting since apps will need to be redesigned to match the new style criteria.
In this graphic by design student Niels Boey, icons from iOS 6 is laid next to their new versions in iOS 7 for easy comparison – you can easily see how much work went into the new look. It’s drastic, but not exactly as flat as icons from Microsoft or Google. In fact, by using a gradient palette for all of the colors, the new icons maintain some of their three-dimensional, skeumorphic origins. Read more
The Guardian’s NSA Whistleblower Reveals Himself: Edward Snowden (Mashable)
The source for British newspaper The Guardian’s recent groundbreaking reports on the National Security Agency’s surveillance practices unexpected revealed himself Sunday as Edward Snowden, a 29-year-old Booz Allen Hamilton employee who’s been working at the NSA for four years. According to The Guardian, Snowden copied the last set of documents he intended to leak three weeks ago at his Hawaii office. He then requested a two-week leave of absence, told his girlfriend he had to leave and flew to Hong Kong, “because he believed that it was one of the few places in the world that both could and would resist the dictates of the U.S. government.”
