Panasonic Turns iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch Into VIERA TV Remote

Panasonic introduced its new VIERA Remote App for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, which is now available on the App Store. You can now watch and browse your VIERA TV with the new VIERA Remote App. It’s pretty cool because the app allows you to quickly and intuitively navigate all the tools and features on your VIERA TV. You can regulate your 3D settings, SD card access and VIERA Connect over Wi-Fi by simply activating the function within your Viera TV’s menu.

What Does Apple iOS 5 iMessage Mean to Cell Phone Companies?

One of small surprising announcements during Apple’s WWDC keynote yesterday was iMessage for the iPad and iPod touch.

iOS 5 Features: iMessage

iMessage for iOS 5 will let iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users send unlimited text messages via WiFi or 3G to anyone else using a iOS 5 enabled device. These messages can be text, photos, video, locations or contacs information. Like the upcoming Windows Phone “Mango”, iOS 5′s iMessage includes group messages. You can also check sent messages using red receipts. It will also provide presence information by letting you know when someone is typing to you.

Google Voice has the advantage of providing unlimited text (sending and receiving) from any source. However, it is currently limited to Android smartphones and the iPhone. The Google Voice app does not even show up in Android Market when viewed from an Android table.

Despite iMessage’s limitation of only communicating with other iOS 5 devices, it will probably be extremely heavily used since it opens up text and multimedia messaging to milions of iPod touch and iPad users may not be aware of what Google Voice can do. Moreover, Google Voice’s messaging is limited to plain text.

The mobile carriers are left almost entirely out of the loop except as a data contuit for 3G and, sometimes, WiFi. Text messaging is possibly the most expensive data service at a cost per character level. So, this is huge potential revenue growth opportunity loss for them. Do not be surprised if you see attempts by mobile carriers to, for example, block this service from 3G use.

Apple All-Time Mobile Sales: 100+ Million iPhones. Nearly 20 million iPads

Apple reported record quarterly revenues yesterday despite lower than expected (by analysts) iPad sales in their 2011 Q2.

Apple Reports Second Quarter Results

Apple provided 2011 Q2 sales figures for their iOS lineup. This means that I can update the total sales count that I reported on yesterday.

160 Million iOS Devices (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad) Sold So Far

You may note that the revised pie chart shown here doesn’t look different from the one presented yesterday. But, there are some interesting changes and a at least one standout numnber.

From a total mobile iOS (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad) point of view, there were small but interesting marketshare changes (note that there are rounding errors):

- iPhone +0.25%
- iPod touch -1.14%
- iPad +0.88%

While these numbers are probably zero change from a statistical significance point of view, it is interesting to note the small marketshare shifts could be attributed to people buying an iPad instead of an iPod touch. This actually makes sense from the point of view of a handy device to use around the house over WiFi. But, again, the difference is so small, this is just an observation on my part.

The really interesting number is the 108,621,000 iPhone sold since day one way back in 2007. Yes, the iPhone crossed the 100 million units sold milestone. And while the iPad’s recent quarter sales may be below analyst expectations, note that nearly 20 million iPads were sold in a few days less than 12 months. The iPad became available on April 4, 2010 while Apple’s second quarter ended on March 26, 2011.

The total number of mobile iOS devices will probably cross the 200 million unit threshold in a matter of weeks.

160 Million iOS Devices (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad) Sold So Far

Asymco reported on the number of iPhone, iPod touch and iPad units Apple sold in total through March 2011. These numbers came directly from Apple as a result of a legal complaint filed by former Engadget editor Nilay Patel.

Review of Apple’s unit numbers released in legal filing prior to earnings

So, how many did Apple sell?

- iPhone: 89,971,000
- iPod touch: 55,500,000
- iPad: 16,026,000

I created a pie chart to help visualize what proportion of the iOS pie each device type owns up to March 2011. The most interesting number to me was the number of iPod touch devices sold. It accounts for 34.6% of the total iOS pie and indicates the desire for a phone-less device. Unfortunately, we do not know the split between WiFi-only and 3G for iPad sales.

FYI: The total number of iOS devices sold through March 2011 is 160,026,000.

Easily See What iPhone Games Your Friends Are Playing With New App

Apptitude, a new iPhone App lets users find interesting and useful new apps by taking into account social recommendations. The app is free to download and lets user find out interesting apps based on what their Facebook friends are using on their iPhones or iPads.

Once the app is downloaded you can log-in using your Facebook id. Once Apptitude has access to your Facebook feeds, it pulls your status feed and scans it for likes and other status updates from your friends to compile a list of top iPhone apps being used by your friends.

The use of Facebook to compile the recommendations ensure that you will be able to get recommendations from your friends, even if they are not using Apptitude. In addition to this, the “recommendations” in Apptitude are very subtle, as your friends don’t go out to recommend or promote the app to you, all that they have to do is to use an app for you to see, what they are using. If a large number of friends start using an App, that would become a very good recommendation or motivation for you to try out that app.

The idea is nothing new, social/friend recommendations are now an integral part of review services like Yelp, Amazon etc. The rapid explosion of apps on Apple Appstore made it all but certain that we would soon have a recommendation app that would recommend useful apps. Apple Appstore currently has more than 350,000 apps for the iPhone and iPod touch and may hit half a million mark sometime this year.

Subscriptions Now Available via Apple App Store

Apple announced Tuesday that it extended the subscription option it launched with The Daily, News Corp.’s recently launched iPad-only newspaper, to all publishers of content-based apps available via its App Store.

Publishers can set the price and the length of subscription, and Apple will keep a 30 percent share of fees from new subscribers it directs to the app, while 100 percent of fees from customers who access the app via other sources — Web sites, existing print subscriptions, etc. — will be kept by them.

App Store users can review and manage all subscriptions via their personal account pages, including canceling automatic renewal of subscriptions. Use of subscriber information will be dictated by each publisher’s privacy policy.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs said:

Our philosophy is simple — when Apple brings a new subscriber to the app, Apple earns a 30 percent share; when the publisher brings an existing or new subscriber to the app, the publisher keeps 100 percent and Apple earns nothing. All we require is that if a publisher is making a subscription offer outside of the app, the same (or better) offer be made inside the app, so that customers can easily subscribe with one click right in the app. We believe this innovative subscription service will provide publishers with a brand-new opportunity to expand digital access to their content onto the iPad, iPod Touch, and iPhone, delighting both new and existing subscribers.

Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Comes to the iPhone

The late-night app wars are starting to heat up, as NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon released an iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad app, LNJF, that includes four made-up apps, video clips, blog posts, and photos.

The fictional apps that became reality on LNJF include Axl Rose Relaxation, which features Fallon’s screaming Axl Rose impersonation over mellow mood music; and Moldova Y/N, which uses geo-location technology to inform users whether or not they are actually in Moldova.

From the LNJF iTunes App Store page:

Need a friend? We bet you do. Jimmy Fallon‘s willing, plus, he fits into your iPhone for maximum portability. What a pal! The new Late Night app lets you explore Jimmy’s phone and play around with his mini-apps from the show. Just what is the “iBanana” or “Axl Rose Relaxation?” Download the app and you’ll never wonder again.

You can also watch video from the show, read blog posts, flip through photos, and it’s all free. (You’re welcome.)

And don’t forget to tune-in to the show, Jimmy’s going to announce a bunch of contests, challenges, and features that use the app.

An Android version is also forthcoming.
