Nielsen: Mobile Media More Popular Among Democrats

Obama_Biden.jpgRemember when Barack Obama announced his VP pick Joe Biden via mobile first? Turns out that wasn’t just a fluke; according to new research from Nielsen Mobile, mobile media is more popular among Democrats than Republicans, MediaPost reports. Here are some more numbers quoted from the article:

- 62% of Democrats use one or more data services on their mobile phones, compared to 55% of Republicans;

- 53% of Democrats use text-messaging, versus 46% of Republicans;

- 17% of Democrats use the mobile Web, compared to 13% of Republicans.

“Though the differences may not seem great, these variations indicate that advertising across mobile channels tends to be more efficient at reaching Democrats than Republicans,” according to the Nielsen report.

‘Obama’ Second Most Searched Term on Mobile

Obama_Biden.jpgAccording to index-tracking data of 200 mobile sites from Crisp Wireless, “Barack Obama” was the second most searched term Index after “Movies/Movie Listings” on the mobile Web during the second quarter, MediaPost reports. It’s down from Q1, where Obama was actually the top search term, but it’s still high.

Our first reaction was that the continued high standing had something to do with Obama’s VP text campaign, but the data is for Q2 which took place before the Joe Biden pick. Nevertheless, here’s some more data quoted from the Crisp Wireless report:

- Mobile Web use was up nearly 30% this quarter.

- The percentage of traffic driven by carrier Web portals, or “decks,” continues to fall as traffic from mobile search increases.

- Search engines are now driving 9.5% of overall mobile Web traffic, a 25.8% increase over last quarter.

- For sites that do have a presence on major carrier decks, 46% of traffic is coming from the carrier sites, which is down from 53.4% in the first quarter.
