The news has arrived: John Mayer has canceled his Twitter account. The famous music artist is terminating his Twitter career because his tour is now over and he is going to focus on studio time — now, his 3.7 million followers will have to look to his blog (on the rising star blog platform Tumblr) for his personal touch. Though some may be sad to see the sultry singer’s tweets go, there are more than a few celebrities who would do well to follow his lead and give their tweeting a rest. Here are the top three stars who should quit while they’re (not) ahead.

Fans of John Mayer who feel the need to “Say What You Need to Say” to the singer-songwriter will have to find an outlet other than Twitter to do so, as Yahoo! Music reports that Mayer deleted his Twitter account despite having collected 3.7 million followers.

AP reported that Mayer said the Twitter account was tied to his “Battle Studies Tour,” which concluded with Saturday’s show in West Palm Beach, Fla. And Mayer said at ASCAP’s 2010 “I Create Music” EXPO in Hollywood in April, “I just think Twitter as a form of communication, I think it’s over to be honest with you,” according to Yahoo! Music.

Yahoo! Music also posted this excerpt from Mayer’s Tumblr page:

I had 3.3 million Twitter followers back in April when I announced that I’d be predominantly posting on Tumblr, a site that takes all of 25 seconds to sign up for. Five months later, I have just passed 500,000 followers, a fraction of my Twitter base … I will leave the opinion up to you, but I think I made the right move.

So, the night before the Oscars, before he walked the red carpet with Jennifer Aniston, singer, paparazzi-hound John Mayer was watching the CBS News’ multi-week documentary “Live to Tell” (or maybe he Tivo’d it.)
