Watch the Hype: How Twitter is Making the New Jay-Z and Kanye West Album More Epic

This week, one of the most-talked about music collaborations ever was released: Watch the Throne, the new album by Jay-Z and Kanye West. Kanye in particular is of course already known for sending ripples through the Twitter waters, and Jay-Z has no shortage of renown, on Twitter or elsewhere. It seems, then, for this album that Twitter has only elevated the hype surrounding the album — and here’s why. Read more

Kanye and Gaga Invest in Turntable.fm

Turntable Logo

Turntable.fm, you beautiful creature. So many of us thought that you had disappeared but here you are again, getting back to business and, reportedly, being funded by two of the biggest names in contemporary pop music: Lady Gaga and Kanye West.

Although the news is still only a well-founded rumour at this point, all signs point to an incoming sum of cash arriving from the (deep, deep) pockets of the Fame Monster and ‘Ye. As valulations of the social music/game company have skyrocketed, some $7.5 million has been drawn up by Union Square Ventures, West and Gaga. Neither musicians’ camps have officially commented on the deal but its validty seems extremely likely, given that Union Square Ventures has gone on record regarding their part in the business’ financing.

West and Gaga aren’t the only ones likely to become interested in Turntable.fm either. The recent financing round that drew the two artist’s attention has led to the service being valued at a formidable $37.5 million (surely more than enough to design a few more loudly coloured player avatars).

With licensing arrangements already having been made with industry giants, BMI and ASCAP, the future looks bright for Turntable.fm. An influx of cash and a solution to the site’s previous legal quagmires are probably all it will take to get the music giant into the right position to enjoy a massive, wide-scale launch.

Turntable.fm is currently in invite-only beta mode right now but, if you’d like to look through the window at what the cool kids are up to, you can go ahead and click on this link. We’ll be keeping a close watch on what happens next as Turntable.fm moves closer to public release.

YouTube Streaming Live Coachella 2011

During the performances the sets were being streamed live on three separate channels, so viewers could pick their favorite performers. Even though it is better to see these musicians live among the tens of thousands on hand at Coachella, it’s great that YouTube could offer the live stream to those who could not make it there anyway.

Catching Up with the One Twitter User Kanye West Used to Follow

Steven Holmes, the teenager in Conventry, England, whose Twitter account hip-hop artist Kanye West randomly chose to be the one that he would follow back in August, is no longer following West, and vice versa, as The Guardian caught up with West for an interview.

Holmes told The Guardian he peaked at about 15,000 followers (he still had 5,682 at the time of this post), and he was bombarded with hate mail from fans of the rapper and media requests, saying, “I was just really overwhelmed. I had journalists outside of my house for two days in their car. I couldn’t believe it.”

He continued, “I’m not a fame-whore. It would be good if you have a talent — but what talent do I have? A man clicked a button. I got so much abuse. Really, really jealous people were saying, ‘You don’t deserve it — I deserve it, I’m his fan.’ It was just so stupid.”

As for why he is no longer following West, Holmes told The Guardian, “Kanye has big rants, and it just blocks the stream up.”

Kevin Thau at Nokia World 2010: Twitter Is Not a Social Network

While Twitter co-founders Evan Williams and Biz Stone were introducing the redesigned Twitter.com at the company’s headquarters in San Francisco, vice president for business and corporate development Kevin Thau was at Nokia World 2010 in London touting Twitter as a news source, and not a social network, ReadWriteWeb reported.

Thau said Twitter is not a social network, adding that it is for news, content, and information, according to ReadWriteWeb, and saying Twitter is changing the news industry because journalists are Tweeting stories, which is even allowing non-journalists to break into the arena.

Two examples given by Thau, according to ReadWriteWeb: Kanye West‘s apology to Taylor Swift was one of the most retweeted Tweets of all time, and, “The guy who saw a plane land on the Hudson River right in front of him didn’t think to send an email: He tweeted it.”
