As Hurricane Irene continues to creep up the East Coast, folks in New York and the world over are waiting to see what will happen when the storm hits the Big Apple. The hurricane, which is packing winds of around 80 miles per hour and upwards, touched down yesterday in North Carolina and has been working its way North, with Maryland and New Jersey feeling the effects, and is expected to hit New York City any time now. YouTube Now Streaming Live…Officially

YouTube has been testing out their live streaming capabilities for a while now. They ran a live streaming trial back in September with several of their partners, and have streamed everything from concerts and interviews to sports over the past year or so. But today they announced that they are officially going live, with the roll out of YouTube Live.

YouTube Live Streaming Trial Begins Today, 8:00 AM PT

Starting this morning at 8:00 a.m. PT, YouTube will be broadcasting live in an experimental trial of their new live streaming platform. The new platform allows YouTubers to stream live video directly from their YouTube channels, and the site is testing it out with four of their partners – Howcast, Next New Networks, Young Hollywood and Rocketboom.

comScore: Live Streaming Up Over 600% Since Last Year

Video portals like YouTube and Hulu seem to get all the attention but live streaming sites like Justin.tv, Livestream and USTREAM are on the rise as well. According to comScore, over the past year, live video streaming sites have seen a huge 648% growth among American audiences, while YouTube and Hulu have grown only 68% and 75%, respectively.

YouTube has been streaming their own content, including sports, concerts and political speeches and debates, for a couple of years now and many have wondered when they would open up their live streaming doors for content creators. ITV, the largest commercial television broadcaster in the UK, will be broadcasting tomorrow’s first election debate between Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Nick Clegg live online, and will be using social networking tools to reach out to the public. The event will begin streaming live on ITV’s website at 8:30 GMT, and during and after the debate users can use Facebook, Twitter, and live chats to discuss the event.

Michael Jackson Live on MySpace: Memorial, Music and Videos

In addition to the broadcast networks and the movie cinemas that will be showing the Michael Jackson memorial service tomorrow, MySpace will be live streaming the event as well. This is fitting, as social media has all but helped to immortalize the King of Pop, from Facebook to MySpace to Twitter. Especially fitting as MySpace is still a social network with a heavy emphasis on the music industry.

At 10 a.m. Pacific Time, MySpace can view Michael Jackson’s memorial service, which will be live streamed here from the Staples Center, courtesy of AEG. As MySpace is still a social network, users will be able to share the streaming event with friends and fans via comments and status updates. Also, MySpace Music is further commemorating Michael Jackson by providing 31 of the musician’s albums and 20 of his music videos for full free streaming domestically.
