Gowalla Is Heading In A New Direction

Since its beginning Gowalla has been locked in a battle with Foursquare for the check-in app market. To their credit, Gowalla is working hard to differentiate itself from Foursquare and their latest attempt at doing so is by focusing on being a location guide rather than a check-in app. You will still be able to check-in using Gowalla, but the changes in the app make it likely you will use it more to decide where you want to go before you actually arrive at a location to check-in.

Liz Claiborne Study Finds Check-ins Not Popular

While the general public seems to have grasped the value of accessing Facebook and Twitter from smartphones, it appears most people do not see the value of check-in apps like Foursquare. According to GigaOm, Liz Claiborne recently commissioned a study to find out how customers use mobile commerce tools. Only 30 percent of those surveyed said they expect to use mobile check-in apps.

While I can do a lot of things with my smartphone, its main purpose is to make me more productive, which it does by enabling me to access a wealth of information on the Internet. The problem is that I have to seek out that information by loading different apps like Twitter and Google Reader, rather than the phone just presenting relevant information. ReQall Rover is an Android app currently in private beta that collects information from a variety of sources and can present it to you using text-to-speech.
