Tango for Android, iOS & tablets.

Tango for Android, iOS & tablets.

Frank McPherson summarized the Windows Phone based Nokia smartphones that will be available in some parts of the world (but not the U.S.) soon yesterday. While you might think that Microsoft would try to build mobile momentun for Windows Phone by releasing a Skype app for the platform (Microsoft now owns Skype), this is not the case. The first video calling service for Windows Phone will be from Tango (not to be confused by Microsoft’s code name “Tango” for what may be a lower cost phone platform). Tango by TangoMe, Inc., already provides free video calling apps for iPhone, Android and desktops running Microsoft Windows. Like Skype, the computer-to-computer communications services are free.

Windows Phone 7.5 (“Mango”) and its associated devices are not available in the U.S. yet, but Microsoft is trying to whet appetites by revealing bits and pieces of information. While the Windows Phone 7 devices uniformly lacked front-facing cameras, some Windows Phone 7.5 devices will. Oddly, the video chat software used is not Skype which Microsoft bought earlier this year. Instead the video chat demo using an app and service from Tango.

The first major update for Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform is due any day now. Winrumors.com says indications are that the day is this week Thursday (Sept. 15). This has an air of credibility given that Microsoft’s BUILD conference takes place this week in Anaheim (Sept. 13-16). It would make sense to release the first public beta of Windows 8 for the desktop and Windows Phone 7.5 for smartphones.

First Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) Device Missing a Front-Facing Camera?

fujitsu_is12t_mango

Fujitsu announced the availability of the first Windows Phone 7.5 (“Mango”) device in the world. But, there’s something unsettling about the announcement.

Fujitsu Launches Windows Phone IS12T

When Windows Phone 7 was announced and released last year, it delivered a mix bag. On one hand, tech pundits seemed to love its fresh Metro graphical user interface design. Personally, I use it as my primary voice phone because it deals with calls they way I like. On the other hand, it left out features that were available in competitors’ products as well as Microsoft’s own previous generation Windows Mobile platform: Multitasking, copy/paste, tethering and more. Windows Phone Mango addresses many of these issues and adds a couple of interesting feature twists.

Fujitsu’s IS12T adds a number of interesting hardware twists to Mango’s software enhancements.

1. Water and dust resistant
2. 13.2 megapixel camera
3. 32GB of built-in storage

There are two missing features that should raise eyebrows, however.

1. No front facing camera for video chats. Note that Microsoft is in the process of buying Skype. So, this ommission is a big one.

2. Fujitsu’s notes indicates that the phone will ship wihtout an email client and it will be available as a separate download in October. This is, most likely, a language localization issue that may not affect devices relesed in English speaking countries.
