The MSNBC Digital Network tallied 161.7 million total online video streams for the month, fueled by the shootings in Arizona, flooding in Australia, mudslides in Brazil, President Barack Obama‘s State of the Union address, and the political turmoil in Egypt. The January figure topped the previous record from June 2009, which featured coverage of the death of Michael Jackson, by 6 percent.

And the Web site for NBC’s morning stalwart, Today, set a new site record with 63.1 million streams in January, surpassing the old mark of 58 million, which was set in August 2010. Former homeless radio announcer Ted Williams, a woman who had been kidnapped more than 23 years ago, the upcoming royal wedding, the winter weather, and the Arizona shootings were strong factors.

CNN.com tallied nearly 80 million page views Tuesday, its highest-trafficked day since July 7, 2009, the day of the memorial service for Michael Jackson. Traffic was up 61 percent compared with the prior-four-week average and 10 percent over the day of the rescue of the Chilean miners.

Unique visitors to CNN.com were up 26 percent versus the prior-four-week average and 10 percent versus numbers for the 2006 midterm Election Day, totaling more than 11.2 million. Nearly 250,000 live videos were viewed, up fourfold from the prior-four-week average.

CNN Politics nearly doubled its prior-four-week average, with more than 25 million page views, and blog CNN Political Ticker saw a 62 percent gain, collecting more than 2 million views.

CNN Mobile welcomed more than 2.2 million unique visitors Tuesday, up 30 percent compared with the prior-four-week average, and mobile page views were up 42 percent to 7.3 million.

She will lead day-to-day editorial efforts and help to further integration with other ABC News platforms. Smith reports to ABCNews.com executive producer Ed O’Keefe.

Smith has also served as a senior producer for ABC News Now and overseen the third hour of Good Morning America, and she has worked as a field producer in Amman, Jordan, and Baghdad after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and on the Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina.

She has also worked on the coverage of stories including the inauguration of President Barack Obama, the 2008 presidential election, and the deaths of Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Michael Jackson.

Songs from artists including Michael Jackson, Coldplay, Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Whitney Houston, and Maroon 5 can be chosen, and audition videos can be shared via other social networks, such as Facebook and twitter

MySpace hosted similar auditions for Don’t Forget the Lyrics!, and MySpace Karaoke general manager Mari Bower discussed other previous related initiatives in a post on the MySpace Blog:

The American Idol auditions on MySpace are an extension of our talent-discovery program as we give our users even more unique opportunities in entertainment, including our recent successful auditions programs. As most of you know, we held the MySpace Glee casting call last spring, which brought a whopping 34,000 audition submissions, more than 105 million gold stars given, and 23 million video views. At 10 a.m. Pacific Time, MySpace can view Michael Jackson’s memorial service, which will be live streamed here from the Staples Center, courtesy of AEG.
