Fast-food chain Jack in the Box is trialing the concept of letting its customers pay for their burgers and shakes with their cell phones.
Mobile Marketer reports that the West Coast burger joint teamed with Bay Area Rapid Transit and Sprint in the experiment that lets consumers use Near Field Communication-equipped phones to pay their trolley fare and fast-food bill.
The trial used NFC and over-the-air card provisioning technology from VivoTech. Trial participants with their special Sprint phones paid for their train rides and Jack in the Box meals by tapping the phone to a special reader. They could also wave the phone at “smart” advertisements to download Sprint content or directions to the closest Jack in the Box.
