A while back Google released a new version of the Android Market web site that added the ability to rent movies and buy books. At that time you could only play movies with a web browser on a PC, or on the Motorola XOOM, which had the Google Videos app, but there has been no way to play Google video rentals on other Android devices. The Google Videos app is now available in the Android Market for devices running Android 2.2 and newer.

If you haven’t heard the news yet, Sony movies have been temporarily pulled from Netflix’s streaming service. The reason? Netflix is becoming too popular. According to the contract that Netflix has with pay television channel Starz, Sony put a cap on streaming rights in regards to Netflix subscribers—over 23.5 million subscribers and no more streaming Sony movie. This strange turn of events begs the question, will the growing popularity of Netflix become its downfall?

Rooted Xoom Tablets Blocked from Viewing Android Market Rented Movies

“Rooting” and Android device is a process that gives the device user complete control over it. People have rooted Android phones for a variety of reasons including installing newer unauthorized versions of Android than the device’s vendor is willing to provide and installing apps that can only be installed on rooted devices.

Owners of rooted Android devices (smartphones and tablets) will find one minor inconvenience described by AndroidCentral.com.

Android Market’s new movie rental service blocked from rooted devices

Google provides movie rentals at market.android.com/movies for, generally, $2.99 or $3.99. The service is currently limited to the Motorola Xoom tablet or a Flash-enabled computer at the moment. Rented movies can be downloaded or, if on the Verizon Wireless network, streamed. Movies must be viewed within 30 days of rental. Most movies must be watched within 24 hours of starting to view it.
