We’ve covered Instagram plenty of times as the service has improved and won awards over the last few months — its quality filters combined with dead simple interfaces make it one of the best photo apps around. Well, at the 2011 Music Hack Day Boston conference, Johannes Wagener and Katharina Birkenbach combined it with SoundCloud to create StoryWheel, and it’s pretty cool.

Tubalr: Like Pandora For YouTube Music Videos

Earlier today I saw a tweet that a friend posted— “Anyone tried using tubalr.com?” I checked out the link and I was instantly hooked. Tubalr is a simple, yet awesome, service that lets you listen to and discover new music, via curated YouTube playlists. They explain, “Tubalr allows you to effortlessly listen to a band’s or artist’s top YouTube videos without all the clutter YouTube brings.” I’d take it one step further and say that Tubalr is like Pandora for YouTube music videos.

Earlier this month we shared a post on how independent music artists are making money through viral video, specifically via the Vimeo Video Store. These artists are primarily making money via commissioned projects coming out of their being discovered on Vimeo. YouTube is doing something a little different, offering music publishers and songwriters the opportunity to make money from the use of their music in YouTube videos uploaded by their fans.

As more and more creators look for music that they can legally use in their videos, independent musicians are taking full advantage. I found out about three independent artists that have used the Vimeo Music Store to get discovered, and even make some money to boot.

In Spring 2011, a group popular YouTube music megastars got together to tour the US, performing live for fans from across the country that had previously only seen them on computer screens. They called it the DigiTour and it was a huge success. So much of a success, in fact, that they’re doing it again. In Spring 2012 the second annual DigiTour kicks off, complete with a group of headlining YouTube artists including Dave Days, Ricky Ficarelli, DeStorm, Alex Goot, Asher Monroe, Nice Peter and The Key of Awesome.

A Look At The Google Music Store On Android

My earliest memories about listening to music involve my favorite local radio stations and disc jockeys. Each DJ had their own style that they showed with the songs they selected to play on air. I remember creating my own mix tapes in high school and college, which were the first way one could create their own playlists like the radio DJs. It is now very easy to create your own playlists and several music apps like Spotify are oriented around playlists. Songza is an app for Android and iPhone smartphones that provides access to thousands of playlists of free streaming music organized in a variety of different ways.

It has been a long time in coming, but today the Google Music store officially launched. Previously, the beta of Google Music was primarily a music storage service for users to upload their music catalogs to make available on the web and mobile devices , although Google has been providing free tracks from independent musicians. The Google Music store is a section of the Android Market, which you can directly access at market.android.com/music.

Myxer Social Radio is a free app for the iPhone and iPad that lets you listen to music with your friends over the network. You can create music listening rooms to share with friends or join a friend’s listening room. Simultaneous music listening and chat is available. However, you can listen to the streaming music alone too. There are featured rooms to get you started. Some of the rooms I see listed are: Return to 54 (disco), 80′s Rewind, Pure Rock, Me and My 10 Gallon Hat and Laugh Lounge (comedy).

Spotify for Windows Phone Available (sort of) with Live Tile Support

Spotify, the subscription social music service, released an app for Windows Phone this week. The Windows Phone version has a few features surrounding playlists that Microsoft says sets it apart from Spotify for other mobile platforms. Spotify for Windows Phone can create playlists on the phone itself, play friends’ playlists and share playlists via Facebook, Twitter and Windows Messenger. One unique and useful feature is the ability to pin a Spotify playlist as a Live Tile on Windows Phone’s Start screen.

One of the advantages to music services like Spotify, Amazon MP3, and Google Music is that they provide a way to wirelessly transfer music to a smartphone. If you use Android and want to wirelessly transfer music between your phone and a desktop computer you can use Winamp, which now can transfer music from iTunes on Macs as well as the Winamp app for Windows.

YouTube Scores Licensing Deal With World’s 5th Largest Music Label

YouTube’s library of licensed music just got a whole lot bigger thanks to a new deal with Merlin, the world’s fifth largest music label after Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and EMI Group. Merlin represents 14,000 artists including Aphex Twin and The Prodigy and now, when YouTubers upload videos with music from Merlin artists, instead of having the soundtrack removed from the video, the artists will receive royalties.

YouTube Launches Merch Store, Lets Music Partners Sell Merchandise On Their Channels

YouTube has just become the next site to hop on the social commerce bandwagon with the announcement that they are launching a new feature called the Merch Store through which YouTube partners can offer merchandise directly from their channels. The store will be rolled out over the coming weeks, starting with music partners. Through the Merch Store, fans will be able to buy anything from digital downloads, concert tickets, meetups, t-shirts and more.
