Freemium Summit East: When Free Isn't Enough — Transitioning from Free to Freemium in the Consumer Space

A panel at Freemium Summit East in New York Monday, “When Free Isn’t Enough — Transitioning from Free to Freemium in the Consumer Space,” featured Ning vice president of business operations Anne Driscoll, SlideShare co-founder and chief technology officer Jonathan Boutelle, and HootSuite founder and CEO Ryan Holmes discussing their companies’ experiences in transitioning users from free services to paid models.

Driscoll started out by discussing the basic premise of Ning: Every group, business, and organization needs a Web site. Social has gone mainstream. Every Web site will be social. She added that Ning brings to the table creative freedom and control; seamless local integration; a robust, scalable open platform; turnkey monetization solutions; data and insights; and privacy control.

In detailing why Ning decided to transition from freemium to a paid model, Driscoll said that in April, Ning contained 325,000 networks, but the 15 percent that were paying some sort of premium represented 80 percent of its traffic. So the company reset its goal to build the very best product for its customers and align its resources to support profitability.

She went into detail on dealing with advertising, saying that it turned Ning into an über-publisher and adding, “When you run advertising, you have to do a variety of different things. You have to make sure your platform and everyone on your platform is safe. If abuse happens, you don’t get paid.”

Ning’s schedule: On April 15, it announced the end of free networks. On May 4, Ning announced new plans, as well as sponsorship plans for its educational users. On June 16, the company detailed its new revenue channels. On June 24, it revealed its partnership with Pearson, and ditto for WEGO July 19. Finally, on. July 20, it launched its Mini, Plus, and Pro plans.

Driscoll’s four takeaway points: It’s OK to ask for money if you offer a great service. You will never make everyone happy. You need huge volume or differentiated audiences to make ads work. Free didn’t enhance our product positioning

Ning Collapses, No Longer Free

Talk about a company falling apart. After Ning’s CEO Gina Bianchini left the company, she was replaced by COO Jason Rosenthal. Jason has some big plans ahead including cutting the staff by 40 percent and removing the free version of the site. The reason? While it wasn’t stated, we can pretty much guarantee that Facebook Pages now owns the free community market and Ning is now putting all the company’s efforts into the free version.

Ning Embraces OpenSocial

Ning.com, a web tool/application/service which allows you to create your own social network has been around for quite some time now. Despite the lack of publicity and hype and too much media coverage, Ning managed to sustain itself and has gradually build-up a large userbase. Well, what can you expect from a web service such as Ning which practically makes each and everyone of us a programmer if we are to build our own social network. If this would not convince you to use Ning and create your social network, what if we tell you that Ning has joined the OpenSocial movement and has opened up its platform to the wild. continued…

Ning Launches Support for OpenSocial

Today, Ning announced that they now support OpenSocial version 0.7. While one step away from the latest version of OpenSocial, this is the first time that applications have been available on the white-label social network platform. The platform will lunch with 25 to 30 applications including Box.net, PollDaddy, Shopit, and Emote! by RockYou. There also appears to be a poking application called “BuddyPoke” but we are unaware of who the developer behind it is.

Ning did say that they are launching their own applications that were developed in-house. The site continues to grow quickly, attracting over 3.2 million people domestically last month according to Compete.com. Now profiles across networks will have access to applications to add some personal flare. The concept of having a distributed white-label social networks with access to all the OpenSocial applications is a powerful one.

Soon enough it will be all about choosing the platform you want to use for your organization, all of which leverage a single standard to make applications installable across all. Well, that’s how it would be if everything goes right for OpenSocial. Unfortunately there are a few hurdles that the standard still needs to surpass. One of which is the development of applications using the OpenSocial standard that organizations would find to be valuable.

For now, you can leverage these applications on your custom Ning network. For those developers that are always staying on top of the latest standards, Ning will support OpenSocial version 0.8 “in the coming months”. Not sure that this really provides substantial guidance but at least we know they are moving forward. Now go join the T.I. network and install your favorite applications! Also, check out the latest T.I. video below. It’s mad deep
