5 Trends That Revolutionized Politics on the Web In 2010

As politicos reflect on the 2010 campaigns, they will likely analyze the nail-biting conclusion that saw Democrats narrowly hold their majority in the U.S. Senate, but lose control of the U.S. House. Digitial enthusiasts, however, will no doubt focus on the way social media, namely Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and smartphones, transformed politics as we know it. Here is our look at the top 5 trends that revolutionized how we, the voters, engage with politicians, and vice versa.

Now, thanks to privacy worms, the rise of third-party cookies and targeted online ads, those thoughts have become a holy grail of digital life. And with a new tool released this week, the solution is now a reality.

Consumers' Surprising Take on Online Privacy

Is the current debate over online privacy more media hype than true consumer concern?

Yes, according to a new study released jointly by Upshot, a Chicago-based marketing agency, and BrainJuicer®, a consumer-driven consultancy firm. Their research found that, when presented with providing personal information in order to receive a useful service, consumers cared more about receiving a highly personalized, high quality and relevant service than protecting their privacy online.

Throwing a Party? 9 Free Online Invitation Websites

You mean people still actually get together? I thought all human interaction was moved online! If you still like the company of other two-legged mammals, and are thinking of having a New Year’s Eve party, there are several great Websites that allow you to invite your guests.

Planning a party is hard work. From music to snacks to drinks, you’ll have plenty to do – so invitations should be the last of your worries.

Evite – Evite has been the default party invitation service for years, and it’s terrible. The invitation does not have the address of the party, forcing you to click on the site, where you are bombarded by ads. What else is out there?

Pingg - Puts all the info you need in beautifully designed emails, and lets you RSVP directly from the website. For a few bucks you can send postcards or even text messages to your guests as well. Easy to use, good looking site.

MyPunchBowl – A clean site that gives you all the basic functionality and allows you to text invites. The cool feature is that yo can let the guests vote on the start time and see how they respond. If 10pm gets more votes than 9pm, you know when to start the party. You can also upload photos and send them around afterward as an after party feature. Depending on the party hijinks this may or may not be a good idea for you. continued…

Create Charts and Graphs Online With Easy Web-Based Tool

For years I have noticed a serious void on the Web. Yes despite this gaping hole, I never made any effort to fill it.

That hole WAS the ability to make simple charts online. Thanks to Chartle.net the void is no more. In fact, this Web-based tool is so slick and so simple to use, it far exceeds the expectations I had for such a chart maker. continued…

Should the Government Change its Rules on SocNet Archiving?

Could the federal government be getting in the way of transparent communication between officials and the public? According to The National Journal, the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy is caught between a rock and a hard place, battling with its desire to interact more with the public via online social networks and the federal regulations that require everything posted online to also be archived internally.

That’s a lot of records that need to be stored. And it’s quite difficult to store such records when you’re talking about activity across networks like MySpace and Facebook. Private messages sent between users, wall postings, status and mood updates…these are all things that change frequently on social networks, and they are things that quickly and easily convey attitudes amongst users. But they can’t be readily archived. Just think of your Facebook newsfeed, which can be completely renewed in less than a day’s time.

College Kids and Parents Connect Online. Is This Bad?

A new study from the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills in the United Kingdom reports that more British parents are using newer technology to stay connected with their children away at school, according to AllHeadlines.

Now, my mother and I weren’t always the best of friends, but while in college I still called her every Sunday afternoon. Back then, I called her on her landline. She rarely used her cell phone and had no idea how to send or receive text messages. Things have changed in the past few years, and my mother now happily embraces her Blackberry, email and LinkedIn. But how much easier would things have been if my mother had been on an online social network when I was in college?

Anyone With a Heartbeat (DNA) Can Find Love

Poor Lenny. My buddy has been single for quite some time, and I don’t think it’s because his name is Lenny. He’s hit up all the mainstream dating Websites. From Match to PlentyOfFish to eHarmony, it’s been an experiment that has turned up nothing but depleted bank accounts, Russian spammers and an empty heart.

Well his heart might be empty, but as long as his mouth has some saliva, he’s in luck.
