Andreessen-backed "RockMelt" Browser Hits the Web

RockMelt, the new socially-focused web browser backed by Netscape co-founder Marc Andreessen, was released (by beta invite request only) Monday. The browser aims to transform web browsing into a true social experience by closely integrating with Facebook, Twitter and other social networks.

The browser has been in development for two years, and uses the Chromium engine pioneered by Google’s Chrome browser. RockMelt founders Eric Vishria and Tim Howes recently sat down with PCMag.com to talk about their new toy and how it stands out from Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera, Flock, and all the rest of them.

Mobile-application developer HipLogic tapped two prominent Internet companies to strengthen its executive team, bringing aboard former MySpace head of mobile products and technology Jason Ling as vice president of product development and former Opera Software manager of worldwide marketing Stephanie Jorgl as head of marketing.

Ling will help drive product innovation at HipLogic. He has also worked with Disney and Infospace.

Jorgl managed worldwide marketing for Opera consumer products including its Opera Browser, Opera Mini, and Wii Internet Channel, and she developed launch strategies for Opera Link and Opera Dragonfly, as well as conceptualizing and launching the company’s “Rock Opera” branding. She also served as an Internet marketing manager for Apple.

“Jason and Stephanie are great additions to the HipLogic team given their past experience helping companies succeed in mobile,” CEO Mark Anderson said.
