Facebook Helps Parents Keep Tabs on Their Kids

During my daughter’s ballet class, one of the parents told me that she was looking over her child’s Facebook page. She knew I wrote about social media, so she asked me to clarify a few aspects about Facebook she didn’t understand. She also mentioned that she didn’t understand half of what the kids were sharing with her daughter, or why they would share stuff.
The two organizations are calling it the nation’s very first Social Achievement platform for schools. The platform is specifically designed to give students the critical thinking skills to set and achieve goals, necessary for success in higher education and in the career arena.

LivingSocial Families Launches in Six New Markets

LivingSocial is calling their expansion ”parent-approved”. The daily deal company is expanding into U.S. and European cities. However, it does sound a little like a commercial, but as parent who knows, saving money this summer with kids is heaven sent. I still wonder: Whatever happened to just going to the park for a picnic and swim?

What Kind of Name is Kakabox?

Don’t let the name of the site throw you off. Kakabox.com is a new interactive site that offers a variety of useful, easy-to-use tools for parents. My favorite is placing photos of the newest addition to the family on a specially designed baby timeline. Parents can permanently capture those early golden moments and place them on a timeline as milestones.

Now, you might wonder do we really need another photo sharing web site. You decide. For me, I am a creative junkie and could use some help in organizing my pictures of my daughter. I love to take pictures, but putting them in chronological order is not my forte. Kakabox offers that solution.

Kakabox also offers a journaling section with an interactive aspect of the site that allows parents to take a spare minute and record by word and video the child’s life as it happens. Because the site is designed for sharing memories as well as saving them, family members share the baby’s first step, learning to ride a bicycle, the first day of school and all those other milestones in every child’s life. Sharing photos and videos is just one aspect of the site.

The site also offers a forum in which parents can ask specific health and child-related questions. Not only can other parents share their accumulated wisdom, but expert advice is also presented in articles covering topics such as how to choose a caregiver, how to feed the picky eater, food allergies and losing the belly fat. However, there are sites that offer this service, so it’s not unique.

Parents can also ask their own unique questions, getting answers about childcare matters that are troubling or perplexing. Topics range from picking names, sleeping problems to homemade baby food.

One of web site’s goals is to offer a social networking community environment designed to help mothers bond with other mothers. Photo contests for “Baby of the Month” are judged by members with fun prizes and awards. Activities, social events and even play-dates can be organized and scheduled easily.

The interaction is focused around parenting issues. Allowing the opportunity for members to trade tips and ideas, the new web site offers encouragement and suggests new approaches to the challenging task of raising healthy, happy, well-balanced children in today’s world.

Another useful feature of Kakabox is its Sleep Mode, an idea but doesn’t work for me. The program is more of a hypnotizing instrument with classical music. If the Sleep Mode just offered a list of soothing lullabies to help ease the baby to sleep, it would do the job for even the most unwilling baby to relax enough to fall asleep. Let’s skip the hypnotic laptop screen.

Remember, the name of the web site is misleading. Kakabox is still very young and has plenty of room to grow. New features will be coming in the future such as printing books and calendars, which I like. The chronological tool seems to be the most useful tool, which helps to share with family and friends photos and videos of your child’s developmental years.

Kids Social Network Introduces Unlimited Radio… Will It Catch On?

Most Parents I know are concerned about what their kids listen to on the radio. So, when I hear about a new radio station just for kids, I turn my ear to hear what is being played on the station. I then determine if it is kids’ safe, and if my daughter would want to listen to the station. This week I am listening to the first-ever kids unlimited streaming music service called imbeeRadio, a personalized and safe listening experience for young users. So far, it sounds pretty good. But, will it catch on?

GoLiveCampus.com Gives Schools Safe Access to YouTube Content

For parents or teachers, YouTube and other social networking sites can be a double-edged sword. Though they are rich with educational content, they also contain explicit videos, inappropriate comments and ads. But now, there is a way for users to safely access educational content on YouTube and Web 2.0. They can use a filtering program called GoLiveCampus.com by iBoss Web Filters.

12-Year-Olds Flocking to Facebook — Does Underage Social Networking Matter?

We know that the popularity of social networking sites is growing. I mean, heck, my Twitter followers grow steadily by the hour. An interesting point to this growth is that the number of young people, specifically 12-year-olds in the U.S., use of the social networks jumped to 38 percent in mid-2009 from 31 percent in 2006.

Parents is bringing back flash cards, Apple-style, as its editors teamed up with child-development experts to create Parents Flash Cards, a new app for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.

Parents Flash Cards are available for colors, shapes, letters, and numbers, with the first two offered free-of-charge and the latter pair priced at $0.99 apiece. The packs contain games including flash cards, quizzes, and tracing. Parents said packs for addition/subtraction and multiplication/division will be available by year-end.

Parents editor-in-chief Dana Points said:

The app uses animation, sound, and friendly graphics to keep kids motivated. And I love the positive reinforcement Parents Flash Cards gives kids as they make progress.

7 Must-Read Mommy Bloggers

Mommy blogging is the new black. And while it seems mom-centric weblogs are a dime a dozen, some crafty women have forged their way by sharing (get this) original, honest content. The following mommy bloggers are women that encapsulate the meaning of success. Their sweat equity has helped them rise to the top – where they’re sometimes criticized, but never ignored.

The Redneck Mommy

Nearly swallowed whole by the loss of her young son in 2006, Tanis Miller was saved by her kids and her blog. Writing at TheRedneckMommy.com, Miller is just as likely to dish out pee-your-pants humor as she is to write a heart-wrenching post about finding her way out grief’s foggy forest. She’s sometimes crass, always honest, and doesn’t try to hide her daily struggle to put one foot in front of the other.

Her Bad Mother

Catherine Connors knows parenting can be an experiment. Her motto, “Bad is the new good,” bashes stereotypes about “perfect” mothering. Blogging at HerBadMother.com, Connors is tight-lipped about nothing. Her faux pas, frustrations, and ugly parenting moments are all a matter of public record – along with joyful posts about her family. Connors believes moms should toss out convention and just figure out what works – and more importantly, what doesn’t. continued…

College Kids and Parents Connect Online. Is This Bad?

A new study from the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills in the United Kingdom reports that more British parents are using newer technology to stay connected with their children away at school, according to AllHeadlines.

Now, my mother and I weren’t always the best of friends, but while in college I still called her every Sunday afternoon. Back then, I called her on her landline. She rarely used her cell phone and had no idea how to send or receive text messages. Things have changed in the past few years, and my mother now happily embraces her Blackberry, email and LinkedIn. But how much easier would things have been if my mother had been on an online social network when I was in college?
