ABCNEWS.com Sets Video Record with Friday Japan Earthquake Coverage

ABC News senior vice president of digital Paul Slavin sent the following email to his staff commending them on their efforts in covering Friday’s earthquake in Japan and Pacific tsunami, noting that the site streamed more video Friday than on any other day in its history:

Although the tragedy in Japan is still unfolding, we are proud to report that Friday, March 11, was the largest single-day consumption of video in the history of ABCNews.com.

Divisionwide coverage contributed to nearly 4 million video starts on the site, exceeding notable events including the 2009 inauguration, the 2008 election, and Michael Jackson’s memorial, among others.

Also of note, ABC News Digital ranked No. 8 in Nielsen in February, marking the 22nd consecutive month we have been in the top 10 news websites in the country. Our average rank over that period has been No. 8, and prior to that, we were consistently 14th.

With continued excellence in breaking news coverage, consistent technical improvements, and redoubling our commitment to essentials such as SEO, we are confident that the future will bring even more success.

ABC News Digital Reorganizes Leadership

ABCNewsCom060310.bmp ABC News Digital is reorganizing its senior leadership, according to an email from senior VP of digital Paul Slavin.

Slavin announced that Jon Dube, VP of ABCNews.com, decided to take one of the buyouts that ABC News offered employees earlier in the year, and will be leaving ABC in July.

As a result, the company has changed its senior leadership to reflect the new structure.

Andrew Morse has been named executive producer of integration and innovation, where he will be charged with working with broadcast producers to develop integration ideas across the television and digital products. Morse was most recently executive prodcuer of “Good Morning America Weekend,” a position which was eliminated when ABC News restructured in April.

Ed O’Keefe has been promtoed to executive producer of ABCNews.com, and will report to Morse. O’Keefe joined the company last August as senior producer for innovation and special projects.

Elizabeth Barrett has been named VP of mobile, broadband and operations for ABC News Digital, reporting to Slavin. She had been an executive director.

Slavin also noted two promotions in the Disney/ABC Digital Media group, led by Albert Cheng. Those promotions are in the email Slavin sent to staffers earlier today, which is after the jump.

ABCNews.com Refresh: More Video, Easier Nav

ABCNews.com_5.21.bmp

ABCNews.com has ditched the black, and gone with a white background as part of a refresh. Among some of the other improvements, easier navigation, including a iTunes-esque “Now Playing” series of ABC videos.

Video is more prominent overall and the center well of news headlines is paired with the ABC News blogs. And, of course, there’s the requisite celebrity picture/story: today, it’s Britney Spears‘ buying habits.

“We’re thrilled to provide our readers with some great improvements to ABCNEWS.com,” ABC News Digital SVP Paul Slavin tells WebNewser. “In this phase of our upgrades, we’ve simplified our navigation, made video front and center, improved our site search tool and created what we think is a more readable, user-friendly design. We’ll continue to make tweaks as we go along and look to our users to give us feedback on what they find valuable.”
