What’s Your Favorite App, Dan Roth?

AppNewser asked, What’s Favorite App, Dan Roth?

The executive editor at LinkedIn picked to-do app Wunderlist because, “the app is clean and simple, loads instantly and works on every platform,” which Roth considers essential, “if, like me, you need to get your must-dos written down quickly or have them disappear into the ether,” he said.

Roth also likes that the app is free and he can prioritize his lists. “I used to use Remember the Milk, but prefer Wunderlist’s easier method for prioritizing, as well as its ability to share lists,” he continued. “I love watching what happens when I complete a to-do: the text gets crossed out, a big check appears and the item drops into a Recently Completed section. And for a few seconds I can feel like Sisyphus reaching the top of the mountain.”

Welcome to our new column, What’s Your Favorite App?, a new feature where we talk to media professionals, journalists and authors about what kinds of apps they are using in hopes of helping readers discover new apps. Read more

Judge Skeptical of Facebook ‘Sponsored Stories’ Privacy Settlement (Wired)
A San Francisco, Calif., federal judge declined Thursday to approve a Facebook privacy settlement concerning the social networking site’s “Sponsored Stories” advertising program, saying he was concerned that the $10 million payout was not adequately explained, and might not be big enough. The deal, which does little to bolster the privacy of Facebook’s approximately 150 million U.S.-based users, provides $10 million to the lawyers who sued the social-networking site and another $10 million to charity, in what is known as a cy pres award. Reuters Facebook and attorneys for the plaintiffs had argued that the settlement — which includes changes to Facebook’s privacy settings — represented roughly $123 million in value. However, the company is only slated to pay about $20 million in cash. Inside Facebook Meanwhile, Facebook appears to be testing Page-Like Sponsored Stories in a mobile module called “Pages You May Like.” With this new module, the social network is showing some users two Sponsored Stories at a time. CNN If you’re using a fake name on your Facebook account, maintaining a personal profile for your beloved pet or have a second profile you use just for logging in to other sites, you have one of the 83.09 million fake accounts Facebook wants to disable. In an updated regulatory filing, the social media company said that 8.7 percent of its 955 million monthly active users worldwide are actually duplicate or false accounts. PC Magazine Facebook said that incidents of duplicate and false accounts are “meaningfully lower” in developed regions like the United States and Australia and higher in developing markets like Indonesia and Turkey. “However, these estimates are based on an internal review of a limited sample of accounts,” Facebook said, so the estimation “may not accurately reflect the actual number of such accounts.” Read more

Motor Trend Launches iPad Magazine

iPad magazines are the new black. Last week The Economist launched an iPad magazine, today Richard Branson announced his new iPad magazine called ‘Project’ and now Motor Trend, the automotive magazine is announcing that their new iPad magazine is available in the App Store.

The Motor Trend magazine app is interactive and designed specifically for the tablet. It features exclusive content that is not available in print or online, including integrated video, audio commentary from the editorial staff and new ways of car comparison charts. The first issue, which is available for $3.99, lets users virtually reveal Motor Trend’s “Car of the Year” award by removing a virtual wrap across the iPad’s display.

With all of these new apps in play on the iPad, we wonder if these magazine publishers will be formatting these digital magzines for the Nook Color, which is supposed to include a lot of periodicals.

Good News for Virgin Mobile

Despite the difficult economy, Virgin Mobile, the joint venture between Richard Branson‘s Virgin Group and Sprint Nextel Corp, announced a profit in Q3 2008 according to Reuters—due in large part to its acquisition of Helio.

Virgin Mobile shares increased 25 percent on the news. The company said the results proved the success of the Helio deal—to some surprise, given Helio’s dwindling fortunes as a mobile media-focused carrier.

“These results clearly demonstrate that we’ve done quite a good job in making the Helio customers immediately profitable,” Chief Executive Dan Schulman told Reuters Monday. Now the hard part: continuing to grow Helio’s stagnant customer base, which numbered about 140,000 at last check.
