Twitter Tarnished Media Figure Revolving Door: Rick Sanchez Returns, Jay Mariotti Out

Twitter regained one controversial media figure and lost another, as sister blog TVNewser reports that former CNN anchor Rick Sanchez has returned to using the microblogging service, while another sister blog, SportsNewser, reported that former Aol FanHouse and Chicago Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti deleted his Twitter account.

Sanchez moved his 145,702 followers from @RickSanchezCNN to @RickSanchezNews, and his first Tweet from the new account read, “now tweeting here @ricksancheznews. Thanks for all your love, support and messages. Keep em coming and stay tuned for more news!

Meanwhile, the fewer than 3,500 followers collected by Mariotti will have to wait for the “book project” he Tweeted about Oct. 5, according to SportsNewser.

New Media Index: Bloggers Ponder Midterm Elections; Tweeters Ponder Twitter

Bloggers were focused on the upcoming midterm elections during the week of Oct. 4-8, while Twitter users used Twitter to talk about Twitter, and the most-watched news and politics video on YouTube was A fake news video from the Onion News Network saying that Justin Bieber is a pedophile, according to the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism’s New Media Index.

The most-shared news links by bloggers were tied to two items from The Washington Post, one about interest groups spending far more during this election cycle than in 2008, and the other on how the political landscape remains strongly tilted toward Republicans. They were followed by: a story from the Los Angeles Times on how more than $69 million in California welfare money was spent outside the state in recent years, at 12 percent; an op-ed in USA Today by Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) saying that tea party populism is driven by anger at the government and divides the country, at 11 percent; another USA Today story about $162 million in stimulus spending not disclosed by the government, also at 11 percent; and a column in The Washington Post by Steven Pearlstein in which he argued that Republicans ignore the idea that income inequality exists in the country in their “Pledge to America,” at 10 percent.

The Full Ginsburg’s Travel Teleprompter iPhone App: Too Late for Some People

Comedy group The Full Ginsburg shared their idea for an iPhone app aimed at those in the media who put their feet in their mouth.

The Travel Teleprompter is described as “the only iPhone app designed expressly to make sure you don’t say dumb shit all the time,” and The Full Ginsburg goes on to say, “Rick Sanchez, Dr. Laura, and Helen Thomas take note: Carry the Travel Teleprompter for all your foot-in-mouth needs.”

Rick Sanchez Gets His Social Media Rock On

Sanchez_1.29.jpg

CNN anchor Rick Sanchez, who got his own CNN show based on his prolific use of social media, is going Hollywood.

Sanchez has been asked to moderate a panel at the Recording Academy’s Social Media Rock Starts Summit ahead of this weekend’s Grammy awards.

The panel includes Digg CEO Jay Adelson, Pete Cashmore, founder and CEO of Mashable, Courtney Holt, president of MySpace Music and Tumblr founder David Karp.

This afternoon’s conversation, held at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, will spotlight the intersection of music and the digital space focusing on the evolution of social media and how it has radically changed the way music fans consume and share news and information about their favorite artists.

Actor Jared Leto, who will also participate on the panel, will be on Sanchez’s CNN show “Rick’s List” today. Leto spent part of his youth in Haiti — his parents were missionaries — so expect the two to talk about the situation there.

> Update: Leto won’t be on CNN, after all. But he is still part of the panel which is being streamed on CNN.com.

> Update 2: Turns out Leto did make it for his interview on Sanchez’s show. As did Jody Whatley.

Ashton Kutcher Follows Through on Ding Dong Ditch; Rick Sanchez Not Amused

So yesterday in Atlanta, Ashton Kutcher made good on his promise to ding dong ditch Ted Turner‘s house for beating @cnnbrk to be the first Twitterer to 1,000,000 followers. But Kutcher went one further, climbing to the top of the house Turner built, CNN’s Atlanta HQ. And CNN’s Twitter hero Rick Sanchez (@ricksanchezcnn / 89,919 followers) didn’t like it one bit.

“You know what that is? I’ll tell you what that is. That is, if nothing else, a publicity stunt.”

Early Thursday morning, Kutcher and his wife Demi Moore (@mrskutcher) also dropped off a thousand ding dongs and rang the bell at a nearby Ted’s Montana Grill.

ABC News Host To Conduct First Twitterview

Last week, ABC’s George Stephanopoulos conducted a back-and-forth Twitter exchange with Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill, who is one of the most prolific Twitterers in Congress.

TwitterGSJM.jpgWell now, the moderator of the Sunday morning public affairs show “This Week” will conduct his first Twitterview — an interview via Twitter — and he’s doing it with Sen. John McCain.

We’re going to attempt to conduct a full interview exclusively on Twitter — complete with the 140-character limit!
All a part of exploring new ways to connect with our “This Week” viewers online. So, if you have any suggested questions for me to ask Sen. McCain — in 140 characters or less — “twitter” me!

Last Friday, msnbc.com’s First Read wrote about how Sen. McCain has gone from being a “candidate who acknowledged during the 2008 presidential campaign not using e-mail or Blackberries to now being a Twitter touter.”

TVNewser conducted its first (and so far only) Twitterview in September with CNN’s Rick Sanchez.

The Teen Behind the Twitter Hacks

Wired has an update on how that hacker — that 18-year-old hacker — was able to get into the Twitter accounts of CNN anchor Rick Sanchez as well as CBS News, Fox News and even Britney Spears’ account. The teen was able to do it because of a weak password.

“I feel it’s another case of administrators not putting forth effort toward one of the most obvious and overused security flaws,” he wrote in an IM interview. “I’m sure they find it difficult to admit it.”

Sanchez currently has over 16,000 followers for his new CNN Twitter feed. Check out the full transcript of the TVNewser interview here.

CNN’s Rick Sanchez to Debut Twitter Channel

CNN_Rick_Sanchez_Twitter.jpg

Twitter fans, listen up: Web 2.Oh. . .really? reports that CNN’s Rick Sanchez will be debuting a dedicated Twitter channel called Rick Sanchez Direct, in what could turn out as an attempt to overload the micro-blogging site, if the following communication from Sanchez’s producer is any indication:

**from Rick’s producer** working out a “follow limit” issue with Twitter. Stuck right now, unable to follow new folks. 09:37 AM September 05, 2008 from web

Some of the anchors over at CNN have already been putting Twitter on the air, particularly over the past week during Hurricane Gustav coverage. The report said that as of yesterday, Sanchez had 8,766 followers, and he follows 4,607 people. The new Twitter channel will launch this afternoon at 3 PM EST; you can find it at this link.
