Group text and picture messaging looks to become a crowded category as 2011 rolls along. Apple started the ball rolling with the announcement (but not the release) of iMessage earlier this summer as part of its iOS 5 announcement. Google provided Huddle as a the group messaging component of Google+ apps for iOS and Android. Facebook Messenger for iOS and Android soon followed.
Next up? Samsung announced their own worldwide messaging service that they claim works across all major smartphone and feature phone platforms.
Samsung introduces ChatON mobile communication service
The service is a multimedia one supporting text, iamges, handwritten notes and video. Unlike Google+ Huddle, ChatOn is also accessible via a desktop browser. Samsung states that ChatOn even works in a basic mode on feature phones.

Owners of Web-connected Samsung television sets now have a little TIME on their hands, as the magazine launched the free TIME Samsung TV app Monday.
The app offers users: the latest stories from TIME.com, with topics including Politics, U.S., World, Business, Technology, and Science and Entertainment; Quotes of the Day; content from blogs including Newsfeed, Techland, Healthland, and Tuned; full-screen video content with fast-forward and rewind functionality; and the ability to switch from app mode to widget mode, allowing users to access the app while watching live TV.
The TIME Samsung TV app will also offer access to photo essays, columnists, and special features such as Person of the Year and TIME 100.

Comedian Jordan Rubin will host a new weekly, online-only talk show for Comedy Central, The Download, which will take a humorous look at what happens when the worlds of technology and entertainment meet.

Samsung and Digitas launched a social technology program called Hunch that enables movie fans to interact on a microsite as a social movie experience. The catch is that you have to have a Samsung television with the program called The Smart Living Room. The program invites movie viewers to learn more about their friends’ movie interest as well as own, and ultimately create a customized, social movie watching event. The Hunch program is equipped with search, web browser and over 400 apps. That’s a lot of apps for movie watching.

According to Gartner, the global mobile app store downloads are estimated to reach 17.7 billion downloads in 2011, representing a 117 percent increase from 8.2 billion downloads in 2010. Gartner further predicts that by the end of 2014, as many as 185 billion apps would have been downloaded from mobile app stores – ever since the first mobile app store was launched in July 2008.
After taking 268 days to reach 1 million downloaded apps, the app store for Web-connected TVs from Samsung took less than two months to double that total, CNET reported.
The two most downloaded apps are YouTube and Hulu Plus, according to CNET, followed by ESPN’s Next Level, AccuWeather, and Google Maps. Apps for Blockbuster, Twitter, and Pandora are also available.
