China’s Sina Weibo Overtakes Twitter’s Record for Most Messages per Second

On December 13th, 2011, Twitter users all over Japan broke a record by tweeting about during a television screening of Miyazaki’s Castle in the Sky — it’s a famous anime that is known by all Japanese and Japanese tweeters tweeted quotes from the show during the entire program.  That was the world record for message per second on a social network until the first minute of Chinese New Year, Monday January 23rd, when Chinese users broke the Twitter record on their own version of Twitter, Sina Weibo.

Tencent Executive Criticizes Chinese Government’s Request for Users’ Real Names

Following Shanghai’s recent move ordering Sina Weibo — China’s Twitter equivalent — to have users report their real names to keep better tabs on them, China’s Tencent has announced that they will not ask users of their QQ social network to provide their real names.  The announcement came from Chief Executive Pony Ma and is in opposition to many real-name policies being activated across China.

HTC Weike Features Dedicated Sina Weibo Button Instead of Facebook

Facebook may be the biggest social network. But, it isn’t the only one in town. And, if a town happens to be in China, the social network many people use is Sina Weibo. Wikipedia notes that Sina Weibo has more that 140 million users. Sina Weibo is described as a cross between Twitter and Facebook.

So, while the HTC Status launched in the U.S. with a dedicated Facebook button, HTC produced a phone for the Chinese market with a dedicated Sina Weibo button.

Note that the phone is not a version of the HTC Status sold in the U.S. It is, however, based on the HTC Salsa which also has a dedicated Facebook button.
