Two teenagers have been arrested over racist tweets  they made towards an English footballers as problems with social media and sports connect to rise in England. Samuel Ameobi, an English born athlete of Nigerian descent, logged into Twitter one day to find his page vandalized.

Social networking and sports seem to be involved in a love-hate relationship, with some athletes finding themselves caught in Twitter snafus while some teams have been banned from tweeting altogether. But one football club—Mexico’s Jaguares—is fully embracing Twitter. This month they’ve done away with their traditional jerseys, replacing their names with their Twitter handles!

In the latest Angry Birds-inspired video to go viral, UNC Ashville goalkeepers Lassi Hurskainen and Dan Jackson face off in a match of real life Angry Birds. The video has already been viewed over 1.7 million times since it hit YouTube a week ago.

All 26 matches of 2011 Copa America, to be held in Argentina July 1-24, will air live on YouTube, including pool play, quarterfinals, semifinals, and the championship match.

Major sports leagues still are not quite sure what to make of Twitter, which has simultaneously allowed players to interacts with fans on a direct level and made for a platform that is easy to misuse. One sports governing body, however, is attempting to find a way to use the medium successfully.

CNN‘s South Africa 2010: Twitter Buzz received an award in the category of Innovative News at the United Kingdom’s Royal Television Society Awards.

South Africa 2010: Twitter Buzz enabled fans following FIFA World Cup 2010 South Africa to monitor and visualize Twitter activity, providing an interactive visualization of how many Tweets per minute each topic generated, as well as photos representing soccer topics generating the most buzz, which changed sizes as the number of related Tweets fluctuated. Categories included players, teams, and topics, and fans were able to browse back through an archive of Tweets from the past 24 hours.

Qatar 2022, which is attempting to bring the FIFA World Cup to the Middle East for the first time ever, is getting a big kick from Facebook, as its page on the social network has drawn more than 500,000 fans.

The host nations for the 2018 and 2022 soccer tournaments will be announced Wednesday.

Qatar 2022 said its Facebook page has received Likes from countries including Egypt (90,000), Jordan (45,000), Saudi Arabia (38,000), Qatar (31,000), Lebanon (23,000), Nigeria (22,000), Palestine (18,000), Ghana (17,000), the United States (14,000), Kenya (14,000), Israel (10,000), and South Africa (6,000).

The organization added that U.S. English was the most common language used to access its Facebook page, at 265,000, followed by Arabic (113,000), U.K. English (60,000), and French (20,000).
