The flood that devastated Pakistan earlier this month was worse than the 2009 earthquake in Haiti, the 2006 Kashmir earthquake, and the 2005 Asian tsunami – combined. Peanut Labs, the only provider of surveys for Facebook Credits on the network and the largest survey providers on the web, is mobilizing its network for an ambitious fundraising effort to alleviate some of the hardships the Pakistani people are facing as a result of this natural disaster. From now until August 31st the company is running a Facebook fundraising campaign to raise $25,000 (and see this amount matched by a donor), and to raise awareness about the lack of international will and media coverage that this tragedy has fostered.

Paypal is making it easier to donate money to your friends and family on social networks. From raising money for a child’s soccer team to gathering donations to support a loved one’s surgery, this new service, called Fundrazr, makes it easy to to make relatively small donations directly on your Facebook wall. This easy one-click solution is right on the heels of similar products to come out, most notably the donation tool Flattr. Whether these services will compete or be able to carve out their own niches is yet to be seen.

Charities and non-profits that have moved some or all of their donation requests online have seen mixed success, and those with the most impact usually have a little something extra to offer increasingly social-hungry netizens. The newly launched eBay-sponsored Humanity Calls campaign is using this logic to get people voting for non-profit organizations dedicated to environmental causes – leveraging our competitive nature for a good cause.
