How Yellow Pages is Leveraging Social to Stay Relevant

I grew up in the nineties, the dawn of digital culture.

For me—and for many others born in the late eighties and early nineties— the Yellow Pages brand was irrelevant; I never understand why people would spend ten minutes leafing though a thick and cumbersome book with flimsy pages to find a restaurant or plumber when the same answers were easily searchable online.

But those born only a few years earlier than me remember a time when the Yellow Pages was more than just a useful doorstop or oversized paperweight, when the brand was an iconic symbol for finding information, not unlike the Google brand of today.

As we move into an increasingly digital world, brands like the Yellow Pages face extinction, since the services they provided have been optimized by internet search engines.

In an effort to remain relevant, the Yellow Pages has moved online, extending their platform to mobile applications and social media sites like Facebook and YouTube.

“Find, review, and share business listings on Facebook” invites the new Yellow Pages Facebook application.

The app, which can be installed for free on your Facebook browser, allows you to search for people and companies, just like the Yellow Pages book. Users can search by business name, keyword, or location, and the program is integrated with Google maps. Users can also read and write customer reviews and bookmark searches for reference later.

The Yellow Pages App is also compatible with the iPhone, the iPad, Blackberry, Android, and the Windows Phone 7, making it easier for people to access local information without having to lug around that thick yellow book.

Demystifying Social Media: Three Key Takeaways from the Success of Nonprofits on Facebook

We’re all trying to make sense of social media, and every marketing “guru” or social media “expert” is selling the secret ingredient or the magic media voodoo that promises to grow your business overnight like a Chia pet. The truth is, they’re tricksters.

Any good social media marketer will tell you that social media takes time, and they’ll remind you that social media is a new medium., and that we’re still navigating it and exploring its uses.

While it’s true that some have more experience than others, one knows ALL the answers when it comes to social media because we’re still evolving the questions.

Until recently, Facebook was “something for the kids,” but in the last two years, business have flocked to the Social Network in an effort to expand their enterprise and “go social.” Some of these companies have leveraged Facebook’s business pages with great success, while others have struggled to be noticed. One sector in particular, however, has seen great success on Facebook: nonprofit organizations.

According to a report from Criagslist, nonprofit organizations generate the most social media buzz. Craigslist founder Craig Newmark wanted to see which issues stirred the most online conversation, and in his research he discovered that nonprofit organizations are the most talked about category on Facebook.

In particular, animal organizations ranked the most popular conversation topic, followed by children organizations and cultural issues. Check out more details on this great infographic from our friends at CraigConnects:

After reading this, the curious cat in me needed some answers: why are nonprofits so popular on Facebook, and what we learn from these findings? Here’s my analysis….

1. On Social Media, Content is King

As a writer, I couldn’t help but be interested in the content that’s being exchanged across the online platforms of these nonprofit organizations. If animal groups are the most popular on Facebook, then I needed to know what kind of images and stories they’re sharing. I had a suspicion, but I needed to do some Facebook research to be certain ….

If you’re on Facebook to save animals, you’re posting image after image of cute puppies, and you’re seducing us with your irresistible content! After all the market research, all the talk of strategy, keywords, the key to social media could just be “cute.”

2. Social media Turns Consumers into Collaborators

This point was taken right off the cover of Clay Shirky’s “Cognitive Surplus,” though Shirky is talking about modern technology in general, and not just the technology of social media.

In the book, Shirky argues that social networking sites have provided us the means to collaborate with one another, transforming media from something we consume to something we use.

The model of social media, then, fits well with the model of nonprofits, because nonprofits are out to HELP rather than to SELL; nonprofits treat their community members as contributors and cause ambassadors rather than simply clients or customers.

Perhaps if more brands thought like organizations and considered how USEFUL they could be then they, too, would be as popular on social media.

3. We’re a do-good generation:

Ask yourself this: how is philathraphy incorporated into your business? The popularity of online organizations devoted to causes evidences that we’re a generation of do-gooders. These days, even an armchair philosopher can do good for the world, so long as that armchair comes with a laptop.

While many of us may not have disposable income to donate to organizations, we do have disposable time, or a “cognitive surplus” as Shirky would call it.

Most of us have Facebook accounts, and many of us are more than motivated to click “like” on your brand’s page or share your brand’s content if we’re invested in your brand’s cause. What’s the driving force behind your business, and how does your social media content help articulate that story?

How to use Facebook to Target Your Dream Job

You’re looking for a job. You’ve been scouring the internet for leads, spending hours on sites like Linkedin, Workopolis, and freelance.com. You’ve emailed off so many resumes your wrists hurt. You need a break.

You log into Facebook. The blue screen is comforting. All thoughts of job-searching dissipate when you see the familiar red notices in the top left-hand corner of your browser.

You spend thirty minutes (or an hour… or two hours) replying to messages and checking in on friends. You’re in social mode— and hey, weren’t you supposed to be looking for a job?

If this sounds familiar, then this post is for you.

If you’re turning off your business mindset when you log onto Facebook, you could be missing out on huge opportunities: Facebook is an untapped professional resource for finding career opportunities and for branding yourself for the job of your dreams.

Brand Your Social Space

The first thing you need to do is “professionalize” and brand your Facebook space. Ask yourself, How am I communicating myself on Facebook? What is the first impression an employer will have when perusing my photos or comments?”

Take your profile picture for example: what attitude does it put forward about you? What does it communicate? If it’s of your cat, you’re not saying anything about yourself except that you really like your cat, and unless you’re applying to PETA or a pet store, this just won’t do.

Your social presence should be clean—or not. It all depends on what you want to say…..

Think about it this way: every photo that is made public on Facebook helps to tell your personal brand story. If part of your professional brand includes that picture of you at your cottage with your five best friends, then leave it. If your professional brand also includes that picture of you upside-down underneath the keg surrounded by the three winners of the trans wet t-shirt contest, then sure, leave it— just as long as you know your audience.

If scrubbing your Facebook profile squeaky clean seems like a big task, don’t worry—there’s an app for that. Check out my earlier article on a new app that cleans your Facebook history.

Aim & Fire

After your social presence is ready to go, make a list of ten companies you’d like to work for. By now, it’s likely they have a Facebook company page that you can easily find using Facebook’s search bar. Check for any buzz about job openings and be on alert for new opportunities.

I’ve always said that finding the perfect job is like finding the perfect pair of jeans on sale—you have to shop around and check back often, so bookmark those company pages and revisit regularly.

If you don’t have time to wait, start asking. It’s not rude to ask on a company’s Facebook wall if they’re hiring, just be sure to engage with the brand as well: “Hey, love your social presence. Do you need help with x?” Start building rapport and getting your name out there.

Want More “Likes” on Facebook? Survey Says Coupons are the #1 Marketing Strategy

These days, Facebook marketing feels like a popularity contest. CEOs and marketing execs are eager to measure the value of social media marketing, so they emphasize the statistics on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

A ton of emphasis has been places on the number of Facebook “likes” a company receives on The Social Network, though even marketing specialists are finding it hard to grow that number: How can brands and businesses grow their online likability? The answer may be more simple than you think: coupons.

Notewagon — Letting Students Upload and Sell Their Class Notes

If there was a network like this when I was in university, I would be rich. Since I was always the brainy kid with the laptop, I was always the one students would ask for notes when they missed (or skipped) a lecture. Though I’d never ask for anything in exchange for my notes, I always thought that I’d make a killing if I did.

Enter Notewagon, where “good notes pay off.” The ambitious web start-up from Toronto “has the same air of Facebook,” according to some. The concept is simple: students who pay attention in class can upload and sell their notes on notewagon.com.

Twitter Gong Show Takes Toronto (A Case For Social Media Marketing)

When Mark DeBonis was asked by a talent booker to think up an idea for an entertainment show at the last minute, DeBois spit out the first thing that came to his mind: a Twitter Gong show.

At the time, DeBonis—a stand-up comedian—was half joking; he wasn’t really sure exactly what a Twitter Gong show would look like, or if the concept could work, but he suggested it anyhow.

Why Your Company Doesn’t Need a Google+ Page… Yet

It’s a tale of two social networks: Once Upon a Time, there was Facebook, the big blue social network, and its little brother, Google+.

Four months after its launch, Google announced earlier this month that its network is now open for business. Business pages, that is. Last week, the Twitterverse was atweet with companies urging people to check out their Google+ business page. I received several tweets from corporate users asking me their opinion on their page. Did I have any advice, they wanted to know? Well, sure, here it is: don’t make a business page on Google+ yet. Oops. Guess you should have asked sooner!

Facebook, Eh? 3 Canadian Businesses Doing Social Media Right

On the whole, Canadian companies are sluggish on social media, says Jameson Berkow, tech reporter for the Financial Post. In a recent article from the FP Tech Desk, Berkow says that “Canadian companies are failing to engage with their customers through social media.” Berkow draws his conclusions from a report that was released by SAS Canada, a leading Canadian business analytics software. The report found that “Only 17% of 1,000 executives surveyed [...] said their company regularly posts to websites such as Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn while also monitoring them to gauge how the online community views their business.” The report doesn’t come as a surprise; in general, Canadian business culture is conservative. “Canadians are thorough in their evaluation, but slower to take things up” says Lori Bieda, executive lead of customer intelligence for SAS.

So Canadians are slow, eh?
