What Were The Most Popular StumbleUpon Photos and Videos of 2011?

If I was pressed to answer, I’d probably say StumbleUpon was the first social aggregator site I ever used regularly. Even before Digg, I had a little StumbleUpon toolbar which had just one big button which read “Stumble!”. Each time I’d hit it, I was provided with a new interesting page from the web that other Stumblers had picked as a favorite. It was also one of the first places that my first blog posts went viral. I wrote a little tirade about how Microsoft Live Messenger had jumped the shark, and Stumblers went crazy for it.

StumbleUpon Gets A Facelift, Complete With New Logo & UI

Google+ Referrals Drop Sharply: Facebook, StumbleUpon, YouTube Lead the Way

There are many ways to gauge the strength of a social network: users, page views, monthly active users and time spent per page are all effective. One that I like to look at is referrals, which look at how often a social network is sourcing a link to great content. For instance, if a blog post goes viral and gets 100,000 views overnight, it’s interesting to look at the breakdown and see where all the viewers came from. Netmarketshare is a company that tracks this type of data, and their November outlook has revealed that Google+ is losing its power to refer content.

History of StumbleUpon’s Influence on the Internet [Infographic]

In 2007, StumbleUpon was created by the two friends, Garret Camp and Geoff Smith, who were in their early twenties and just finishing off post-graduate studies in Calgary, Canada. Camp told BBC the development of StumbleUpon started with a general idea of “how to discover really interesting information without searching for it.”

StumbleUpon Shutting Down Themes, Photo Blogs

The company reports that they are shutting down groups, photo and HTML blogging, and the ability to select themes. The reason behind the decision is to simplify the service and make it easier for a broader audience to use.
