T-Mobile launched a service this week that lets Facebook users make voice calls to other Facebook users or conventional telephones. Calls from Facebook to other users or telephones in the U.S., Canada or Puerto Rico are free. Voice messages can be left as Facebook status updates on a friend’s page. You can see what this status update looks like in the screenshot to the left. I left the voice message using the Bobsled app on an iPad.

T-Mobile Expanding Direct Carrier Billing to (almost) Any Web Browser

tmobile_logo_medium

Direct Carrier Billing lets you charge digital purchases to your phone bill. These digital products include: Digital games, gaming and social networking credits, music and videos. This service has been available to T-Mobile customers who use Android phones since 2009. However, Direct Carrier Billing can now be used by T-Mobile customers from any web browser (desktop, netbook, tablet or smartphone).

Direct Carrier Billing will use billing services from BilltoMobile, Boku, OpenMarket, Payfone, and Zong. Purchases will require a two-step authentication (not just a password). The service will be available later this month (August 2011).

The iPhone 4 with its microSIM presents even more of a challenge since the additional step of shaving T-Mobile’s conventional sized SIM card down to a microSIM form factor.

The success of deal sites like Groupon and LivingSocial apparently interested T-Mobile so much that they created their own service and Android app.

T-Mobile launches More for Me daily-deal app for Android (LA Times)

T-Mobile’s More for Me Android app is available in the Android Market and can be downloaded by people not using a T-Mobile Android Phone.

More for Me (Android Market)

T-Mobile More for Me is a nationwide aggregation service that offers consumers the best in daily deals. The service is completely free and enables consumers to get the best and timely offers, discounts and deals from some of the biggest names in daily deals tailored to their preferences, location and interests.

The LA Times notes that this “aggregation service” involves other deal sites such as LivingSocial (but not Groupon).
