When we first learned about the iPad, it was promoted as a content consumption device. Given the iPad’s on-screen keyboard that can be challenging for typing a lot of words, I can understand the emphasis on content consumption. However, when you turn on an iPad what you see is a grid of icons that don’t translate to content. In contrast, when you turn on the Amazon Kindle Fire content is front and center. Some might say it is the true content consumption device.

Netflix announced that its free Android app was updated this week to provide a better experience for viewers using an Android tablet. This tablet support includes the Amazon Fire and Barnes and Noble Nook Tablet that also became available this week.

TechCrunch summarized video watching data provided by video publishing and analytics firm Ooyala. Ooyala’s data indicates that tablets are used to watch 28% more video than desktops or smartphones. Videos views on tablets are also twice as likely as being viewed to completion (as opposed to abondoning before the video is finished) than other devices. “Longer” video is defined by Ooyala as those more than 10 minutes long. These long form videos account for 42% of the time spent watching video on tablets compared to 30% on other mobile devices (presumably smartphones) and 75% on connected devices like TVs and game consoles.

Today Barnes and Noble announced the Nook Tablet, their latest device that they intend will compete with the Amazon Kindle Fire. In my opinion the announcement of this $249 device helps sharpen the picture of the tablet market into low-end and high-end tiers.

The TWCable TV for iPad app did not work for me when it was first released because the service was not available in my area at that time. Now, that service is available here, I have not been able to login and try it. The iPad app has received a lukewarm response according to customer ratings in the iTunes App Store. 6513 user have chimed in to give it a 2.5-star average customer rating (out of a possible 5) with 2857 people giving the app a 1-star rating (43.8%). Only 1723 people gave it a 5-star rating (26.45%). Still Time Warner states people seem to love it and announced that a similar app for Android tablets is in development.
