New iPhone App from The Guardian Adopts Subscription Model

The Guardian expects its updated iPhone app to be approved this week, shifting from a one-time charge of £2.39 ($3.72) to a subscription model at £2.99 ($4.66) for six months or £3.99 ($6.21) for 12 months, as reported by paidContent, a sister company to the U.K. newspaper.

The figures above apply to users in the United Kingdom, as paidContent reported that The Guardian was disappointed by download figures in the United States and will offer a free app to be supported by ads placed via Apple iAds.

Speaking about the U.K. app, Guardian.co.uk editor Janine Gibson told paidContent:

We’ve been consistently amazed by returning usage and levels of engagement in-app. It hasn’t tailed off at all.

We were struck by the consensus of requests for new features, but also the number of people who said they would pay more, and even the level they would be prepared to pay in exchange for these features.

Our aim is to see if we can convert the vast majority of our users in to the new app. If we don’t, we’ll have to look at the pricing. But I’ll be surprised if we don’t.

Om Malik, Rafat Ali Banter via Twitter About Possible Restructuring of Guardian Media Group

News that Guardian Media Group — parent company of The Guardian, The Observer, and paidContent — will undergo a restructuring brought about a Tweet exchange Sunday evening between two tech-site founders: Om Malik of GigaOM and Rafat Ali, who left paidContent at the beginning of July.

Malik to Ali: @rafatali maybe u should buy back paidcontent from them while they are at it

Ali to Mailk: @om I exited the news industry, and happier for it. You should buy the assets, I say.

Malik to Ali: @ rafatali haha. maybe only if you can help me with it :-)

According to paidContent, the print edition of The Sunday Times reported that new Guardian Media Group CEO Andrew Miller will restructure the company by separating The Guardian, The Observer, and their respective Web sites from the rest of its multimedia assets, including its holdings in Trader Media Group and Emap, as well as radio stations and property Web sites.

Not-Quite-The Guardian iPad App Today’s News Debuts

Full text from all of the content of The Guardian is now available via an iPad app, which is available free-of-charge and which contains advertising. But The Guardian doesn’t offer an iPad app.

Today’s News went live on the iTunes store earlier this week, paidContent:UK reported, and the app — inspired by independent designer Phil Gyford and created by Gameplan founder Andy Croll — uses the newspaper’s open-platform application-program interface to repurpose its content.

The Guardian is not yet selling ads for its open-platform content, according to paidContent:UK, yet Today’s News contains ads.
