Twitter Adds Verified Accounts

BayNewser’s got the latest on Twitter’s move to ‘Verified Accounts.’

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone announced the feature for celebrity tweeters on the Twitter blog Saturday. The account will contain a seal indicating authenticity.

“The experiment will begin with public officials, public agencies, famous artists, athletes, and other well known individuals at risk of impersonation,” wrote Stone on the company blog.

The program is currently in beta version, and will expand as Twitter receives more feedback.

Stone also responded to the Tony La Russa lawsuit. More on BayNewser.

Tony La Russa Sues Twitter Over Fake Page

LaRussa_6.5.JPGThe AP reports St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa is suing the social-networking site Twitter, claiming an unauthorized page using his name damaged his reputation and caused emotional distress.

The lawsuit claims someone created a false account under La Russa’s name and posted Tweets that gave the impression that the comments came from La Russa. The suit said the comments were “derogatory and demeaning” and damaged La Russa’s trademark rights.

For its part, it appears Twitter has taken down an @tonylarussa page.
