hipmunk_android_1109

Hipmunk is a flight search and booking app available for both Android and iPhone or you can use their web site to book flights from a desktop computer. One of the unique features of Hipmunk is that they sort results by “agony,” which is a combination or price, flight duration, and number of stopovers, and “ecstacy” which is a combination of price, amenities, and reviews. The service now has a new feature that integrates with Google Calendar to determine which flights are best based on your schedule.

hipmunk_android_1109

Hipmunk brought its flight search app to Android. Like the iPhone version and the website, the new free Android app incorporates an agony factor when sorting flights. It also indicates if WiFi is available in-flight. Once a flight is identified, it can be booked right from the app, from a desktop computer or emailed to someone else.

Hipmunk In-flight WiFi Indicator Coming to the iPhone and iPad App Soon

The desire to e-communicate while traveling is a big one. There was a time when we searched for hotels that provided phones with pass-thru jacks for analog modems. Then, the search turned to hotel rooms with Ethernet jacks. Then, the search expanded to businesses of all kinds that provided WiFi (preferably free). The latest e-communication search is in-flight WiFi. If you prefer flights with in-flight WiFi, Hipmunk now provides an easy way to find the right flight for you.

New: Find Flights that Have Wi-Fi!

The WiFi symbol now appears in flights that provide the service. You can see an example in the screenshot here. This feature is only available on Hipmunk’s website today. However, this feature is coming to their free iPhone and iPad app in the near future.

Griffin DriveSafe for iPhone Interesting but Has Limited Usefulness

If you drive far from home this summer, you may find yourself in areas where hands-free cell phone laws are different than your home town. Griffin Technology’s new free iOS app can help you learn what local handsfree driving lawas may be in effect where you currently are driving.

Drive Aware. Drive Compliant. DriveSafe.

It also provides Map Search to identify nearby roadside services, fuel, food and medical facilities. Finally, the app provides a list of Griffin hardware accessories that can assist with complying to handsfree driving laws.

The app does not use the GPS to get your current location and automatically link you to local handsfree driving laws. However, the simple menu-driven system is easy to use to drill down to find information about an area.

A potentially big problem with the app is that its U.S. information appears to only account for laws issued by state governments. It does not, for example, note that my city and county has handsfree driving laws even though the State government has not weighed in on the matter. This makes the law compliance aspect of the app questionable in its usefulness.

The facilities search feature does use GPS provided location. However, using it exits the app and jumps to Google Maps on the iPhone. This means that multiple searches involves switching back and forth between the app and Google Maps.
