Aneesh Chopra, the White House’s first-ever chief technology officer, has announced his resignation.

Twitter: Where People Go to Complain About Other Social Networks

It’s no wonder that people turn to Twitter for tech support. In the heat of a frustrating moment, it is much easier to fire off a quick question on Twitter than to wait on hold for an operator. But how effective is the microblogging site as a customer service tool? Here’s how Spotify, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Yelp handled some tough customers.

What Are People Saying About SOPA on Google+, Facebook and Twitter?

Unless you’ve been hiding in your IP-hidden digital cave for the last few weeks, you’re probably aware that the Internet is currently rife with protests for SOPA, the Stop Online Privacy Act. Critics from Silicon Valley and various technology companies around the world blacked out their sites to protest the bill, which effectively would give the American government a kill-switch to shut down websites that have pirated content.

So how has the social web been responding?

The Art of the ‘Twinterview’: How to Conduct an Interview on Twitter

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has confirmed that the free online encyclopedia will shut down on Wednesday, January 18 in protest of the Stop Online Privacy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA), two anti-piracy bills that are currently being debated in Congress.

12 Steps to Creating a Successful Twitter Chat

A growing trend over the past 2 years, if not longer, is the use of Twitter chats. Twitter chats are sometimes spontaneous, but are typically organized as reoccurring events. What defines a Twitter Chat from the general back and forth tweets in your Twitter stream is the use of a common hash tag (for example #SocialChat which takes place on Monday night’s at 9pm eastern).

By uniting all relevant tweets with a common hash tag, organizers and participants can easily follow the group conversation. With the ever growing number of chats out there, how do you determine if organizing a chat is the right move for you, and how do you create a successful one?

Twitter Calls Google’s Search plus Your World a ‘Bad Day for the Internet’

Not everyone is happy with Google’s decision to integrate its social network, Google+ with its popular search engine. Not long after Google announced Search plus Your World in a blog post, Twitter general counsel Alex Macgillivray fired off this tweet in response:

The biggest complaint seems to be that Google+ would be able to push its own content to the top of the search results ahead of Twitter’s, which would undermine the democratic nature of Google’s signature page-ranking system. The official statement from Twitter, sent to AllThingsDigital, was this:

For years, people have relied on Google to deliver the most relevant results anytime they wanted to find something on the Internet.

Often, they want to know more about world events and breaking news. Twitter has emerged as a vital source of this real-time information, with more than 100 million users sending 250 million Tweets every day on virtually every topic. As we’ve seen time and time again, news breaks first on Twitter; as a result, Twitter accounts and Tweets are often the most relevant results.

We’re concerned that as a result of Google’s changes, finding this information will be much harder for everyone. We think that’s bad for people, publishers, news organizations and Twitter users.

Google responded publicly, “We are a bit surprised by Twitter’s comments about Search plus Your World, because they chose not to renew their agreement with us last summer (http://goo.gl/chKwi), and since then we have observed their rel=nofollow instructions.” ( The code “rel=nofollow” instructs search engines not to follow links in order to reduce spam.)

Google’s strategy from the beginning has been to integrate its other applications into Google+, from Gmail to Picasa albums to YouTube, which makes joining the network more of an inevitability for users than a choice. Now the other social networks are feeling the effects. For lack of a more elegant explanation, Twitter and Google seem to have business-end negotiations to work out to make the new personalized search experience fair for everyone.

Will the Twitter Redesign Threaten Tumblr?

Unless you’ve been living in a bird-free zone, you know that Twitter recently overhauled their home page. The new page allows people to see shared videos, links and photos directly within the stream of Twitter by clicking the ‘open’ button. Photos are expanded, videos are displayed and even links to text articles are expanded into small snippets of the original source. I worry that this is going to take its toll and put pressure on services like Tumblr.

TwitVid Gets A Social Facelift, Now Feels More Like Twitter For Video

Twitvid has made a name for itself as one of the biggest repositories of videos shared on Twitter, second only to YouTube, with over 40 million monthly views and over 12 million unique viewers. However, starting today Twitvid is going from repository to social destination with a major facelift that takes the service to a whole new level.
