Amazon Teaming up with US Postal Service to Offer Sunday Deliveries

amazon primeAmazon Prime customers in New York and Los Angeles will now be eligible for Sunday deliveries, just in time for holiday shopping. The latest service update is a collaboration with the ailing US Postal Service (USPS), who nearly stopped Saturday deliveries earlier this year.

The USPS saw loses in $16 billion last year. The limited delivery schedule would have saved the USPS $2 billion each year, but Congressional legislation prohibited the USPS from reducing delivery days.  With no other options, the government agency would have had to cut hours and services, so it’s not likely that service quality will drastically increase, given that the USPS plans to do  no new hires to handle the extra work.   Read more

Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg has one of the most impressive resumés in the tech world, including a stint as chief of staff in the U.S. Treasury Department, and working to make Google into the giant that it is today. But as The Wall Street Journal discovered in an early reading from Sandberg’s book, before she worked for Facebook, she was offered the top job at another social networking site — LinkedIn.

USPS Creates Another Interactive App Using Augmented Reality

Color me shocked when I saw USPS’s latest app using augmented reality. Basically, you scan some snail mail (presumably junk) and the app shows you the rest of the ad in sleek, interactive features. 

Augmented reality is not new to USPS. In June of 2009, its Priority Mail website launched a Virtual Box Simulator wherein users can determine whether their items will fit into flat rate boxes. This 3D feature did not redeem the poorly performing organization.

The app might be a good effort to maintain technical legitimacy but the USPS must start delivering packages with consistency before its apps will actually be useful. I’m still waiting on a package that USPS managed to lose since mid-December. Users on USPS Facebook page constantly bemoans the lack of great customer service – there’s great opportunities for interactive mail, but you have to prove that you can actually deliver mail.
