We can’t do much to about the weather but most of us like to talk about it anyway. So, why not organize this weather information sharing? I took a look at the free Weddar for iPhone and Android earlier this year and came away unimpressed because, as I wrote earlier, While a crowd sourced social weather app seems like a good idea, its dependence on the crowd instead of conventional weather sensors means that its usefulness is greater or lesser depending on how many people participate. From what I can see, there are now fewer U.S. data points available compared to this past April when I tried the iPhone version.

The Weather Channel iPhone App Gets Social: Crowdsourced Local Weather Related Tweets Now Available

weatherchannel_social_1108

The Weather Channel and Twitter have teamed up to create 220 customer local Twitter feeds for cities with populations of 100,000 or more. Weather-related tweets range from 200 per minute on an average day. An active weather day can bump this number to as high as 500 weather related tweets per minute.

The Weather Channel Teams up with Twitter to Launch the Weather Channel Social

If you have an iPhone, The Weather Channel 4.0.0 app update includes a new “Social” tab at the bottom that provides access to weather related tweets from the surrounding area. Note that not all tweets will directly refer to local weather. The tweet selection appears to be based on the location provider by the person tweeting (an opt-in process in Twitter) as key words related to weather.

The app also includes a Tweet button that lets you send a weather related tweet (or anything else for that matter) without leaving the app.

The Weather Channel (iTunes App Store)

The Weather Channel app for the iPad has not yet been upgraded to display the weather related tweet stream.

The Weather Channel app also includes the following features:

- Interactive maps with animated radar
- Severe weather alerts for your location
- Hourly and 10-day forecasts
- Pinpoint your location for exact weather conditions
- Video of breaking news and amazing weather coverage
- View and post weather tweets
- Upload and view photos and videos for weather in your area
- Post local weather to your Facebook wall

What would you guess is the second most used smartphone app behind Facebook’s? Twitter, perhaps? Evernote? Angry Birds? Those would have been my guesses. The answer, however, according to The Weather Channel’s press relese is the various veresion of The Weather Channel mobile app which is available for iPhone, Android, Windows Phone and more.

The Weather Channel Max for iPad

Here are numbers associated with the TWC apps:

- 4 million iPad downloads. One out of every five iPads sold
- 45 million app downloads across smartphone and tablet platforms
- 150 million unique visitors across all platforms
- 60% of mobile users with the app use it at least once a day

The Weather Channel Max for iPad app has a 2.5 average rating for the current version and a 2 star rating for all version. Many of the comments from the February time frame (no more recent comments appear) note app crashing and freezing problems. I do not, however, see those issues when running the app on my iPad 2.
