The White House Is Now ‘Tumbling Things’

When bills become infographics and the President’s speeches are reduced to animated gifs, it can only mean one thing: the White House has officially joined Tumblr. Look out, Internet.

The socially savvy Obama administration knows its memes. Its first blog post shows how official government news and public debate will look when it’s done Tumblr-style:

“We see some great things here at the White House every day, and sharing that stuff with you is one of the best parts of our jobs. That’s why we’re launching a Tumblr. We’ll post things like the best quotes from President Obama, or video of young scientists visiting the White House for the science fair, or photos of adorable moments with Bo. We’ve got some wonky charts, too. Because to us, those are actually kind of exciting.”

And here’s the “wonky” chart to prove it. Check it out.

Associated Press @AP and @AP_Mobile Twitter Accounts Hacked

An alarming rumor circulated through Twitter today that the White House had been bombed and that President Obama had been injured. The source? The Associated Press, a reputable news organization whose Twitter account was hacked.

At 1:07 p.m. ET, the @AP account tweeted the following message: “Breaking: Two Explosions in the White House and Barack Obama is injured.”

The Associated Press has since released the following statement:

Hackers have compromised the main Twitter account of The Associated Press, sending out an erroneous tweet about an attack at the White House. The tweet, which said that there had been two explosions at the White House and President Barack Obama was injured, came after hackers made repeated attempts to steal the passwords of AP journalists. The AP said Tuesday that its Twitter account had been suspended following a hack and said it was working to correct the issue. The cyberattack is the latest in a string targeting international media organizations. The tweet put out by hackers briefly sent the Dow Jones Industrial Average sharply lower.

The company added:

In addition to the main AP Twitter account (@AP) being hacked, AP’s mobile Twitter account has also been hacked. Please do not respond to news posted by @AP_Mobile. The account will be suspended as soon as possible.

The Associated Press has been using multiple outlets to warn the public, including Facebook.

“The Associated Press Twitter account (@AP) has been hacked. Please do not respond to news posted there in the last 20 minutes,” the company said on Facebook.

AP also tweeted at 1:18 p.m. ET from the Associated Press Stylebook account, @APStylebook, “The (at)AP twitter account has been hacked. A tweet about an attack at the White House is false. We will advise on acct. status.”

Associated Press reporter Mike Baker added from his @MikeBakerAP account that “The @ap hack came less than an hour after some of us received an impressively disguised phishing email.”

What's Moving Online Privacy? From Congress to the White House…

The push from the White House will likely give a boost to the many privacy bills floating in Congress, but what’s next, and what does it all mean for consumers, and constituents? We take a look at the road ahead.

White House Explains 'Startup America' with Markers

Still confused about Presidant Obama’s Startup America program? Well, Austan Goolsbee, Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, has drawn everything out for you on a white board.

As part of the White House White Board series, Goolsbee explains how the public-private initiative is trying to get entrepreneurs over the “valley of death.” He actually presents a fair overview of how it’s all theoretically supposed to work: Entrepreneurs need capital, less red tape, mentorship, and low taxes.

He goes on to say that “Americans understand the business model of a kid in a garage who creates the giant company. We invented it! We’ve done it before, we’re doing it now, and with Startup America we’re gonna do it better than ever!”

You said it Michael Scott! Er… I mean Chairman Goolsbee.

White House Enters Online Privacy Fray with Privacy Subcommittee

Against the drumbeat of almost daily reports of new online privacy breaches, the federal government has done what it does best to tackle a policy issue: create a committee.

Check in, Tweet, and Update to Get Obama to put Solar Panels on the White House

A new advocacy group is on the social networking scene, and this one has its sights set on a high-profile target: The White House. Solar on the White House’s Power the House campaign is calling on solar advocates to use their Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and FourSquare to show support for the initiative to see solar panels on the White House. This campaign goes further than just a simple social network call to action by creating a game out of advocacy in an attempt to entice users with points, prizes, and recognition.
