As the Winter Olympics get ready to kick off in Sochi, Russia, Feb. 7, the U.S. team has a new app out to guide fans through all the intricacies of the snow sports (Skelton? Nordic Combined?) and the 2014 team.
The “2014 Team USA Road to Sochi” app offers bios for the American Olympic and Paralympic athletes, including their past Olympic experience, career highlights, video and photo galleries and any recent news. Users can also scroll through the winter sports to learn more about the rules, history and this year’s team.
A right-hand navigation bar offers several tabs to choose from, including the sport and athlete profiles, but also an events schedule with date and time listings for each competition. A “My Team USA” tab lets the user compile a roster of favorite athletes into one location in the app where stats, results and video will be easy to find. Setting up social media feeds let users interact with athletes via Facebook and Twitter through a “Cheer” button. Another link brings users to a Team USA swag page where T-shirts and other items are for sale.
The design is simple but sleek with crisp, big photos. It’s easy to scroll through to find a favorite sport or athlete. The free app, sponsored by Smucker’s, is available for iOS and Android.
Team USA, of course, is not the only 2014 Olympics app out there. For example, there’s the official “Sochi 2014 Guide” that offers a more global look at the games, including supporting three languages (English, French, Russian); interactive maps; and a way to follow the torch relay.
