The Annoying Orange Finds A New Home On Cartoon Network

YouTube sensation The Annoying Orange will soon be annoying the masses not only from computer screens but from television screens as well.  YouTube’s favorite fruit has been picked up by Cartoon Network.  Variety reports, “Cartoon has ordered 30 11-minute installments of the series, which will fit into similarly formatted series on its Monday primetime schedule.”  Annoying Orange will hit Cartoon Network as early as next summer.

Chief content officer at Cartoon Network, Rob Sorcher, says, “It’s fair to say that there’s not been a property before this that comes with this kind of success in another medium.”  Created by Dane Boedigheimer, The Annoying Orange videos have brought in over 893 million YouTube views and over 2.2 million subscribers.

Dane told Marc Hustvedt of Tubefilter, “Basically the plan is to really take advantage of TV’s longer format and expand the AO world way beyond what is it on YouTube…really dive into the characters and their personalities.  Of course we would continue to do the YouTube show as well.  I think there’s an advantage to being able to drive traffic to TV via the web and vice versa.  The two will work together in tandem.”

The Annoying Orange isn’t the first YouTube show to get a deal like this.  Lucas Cruikshank’s Fred Figglehorn got a movie deal with Nickelodeon, Rhett and Link got their own IFC show called Commercial Kings and those are just two examples.  Congrats Dane!  We’re wishing you all the success in the world!
