It was just a few months ago that most of us were wowwed by Verizon’s introduction of their pocket sized MiFi router that takes their $60 per month 3G wireless data service and distributes it to up to 5 WiFi devices. Sprint followed suit with essentially the same product for the same monthly data plan price a few weeks later.
Now, Sprint has a 3G/4G product that looks like their Clearwire partner’s offering…
Sprint Adds 4G to Mobile Broadband Router Portfolio as It Prepares to Launch 4G in More Markets
The “4G” data refers to the WiMAX widearea wireless broadband service that essentially allows distribution of high speed data with fewer towers. Sprint’s announced plan prices range between $39.99 to $79.99 per month. Sprint has two hardware products for these services:
- Sprint Personal Hotspot PHS300S supports up to four simultaneous Wi-Fi connections
- Cradlepoint MBR-1000 Broadband Router for business supports up to 32 simultaneous Wi-Fi connections.
I’ve been considering getting Verizon MiFi service for the past couple of weeks. But, since Sprint 4G service is scheduled to be rolled out in my home town this year, I’m going to wait until that happens before making a wireless broadband service decision.
