Thumbplay, the mobile entertainment site, just launched a beta version of a new full-service digital music store that offers millions of full-length, DRM-free songs, FierceMobileContent reports—optimized for wireless download to MP3-enabled phones, portable media players and PCs.

Thumbplay is pricing the downloads at 99 cents per song, but unfortunately, it’s doing it on a monthly subscription basis. In other words, for $9.99 per month, a customer gets 10 credits for use toward any content on the service. That’s lame. However, new customers get 10 bonus credits during their first month of service, which makes up for it a *little*.

The company said that deals with just two of the major labels—Universal Music Group and EMI Music&mash;are already in place, along with independents The Orchard and INgrooves. In other words, it’s notable for its DRM-free focus but sounds half-baked otherwise.
