My wife recently pointed out to me that this year my birthday is also Tax Day 2011. What a nice way to remind me that I will soon be another year older and that we need to work on our tax returns! To help make the sting of Tax Day a little less painful, the IRS has released IRS2Go, which is an app available for the iPhone and Android that provides your tax refund status.
The IRS2Go app’s function is very straight forward, it queries the IRS to provide you with your income tax refund status. To do so you will need to provide your social security number, filing status, and refund amount. According to the Wall Street Journal, the IRS says your SSN is masked and encrypted in transit. I think the app should include a link that explains how the SSN is secured rather than the link to the IRS’ privacy notice, which is copy and pasted from irs.gov.
Other functions that the app provides include the ability to sign up to an e-mail subscription to get tax tips, a link to follow the IRSNews Twitter feed, and links for phone numbers that you can call to ask questions. The app is available now in the Android Market and iTunes App Store.
