Twitter Finally Releases Vine for Android, Adds Zoom

Twitter has released the Vine app for Android, giving Android users access to the six-second looping videos that iOS users have been able to post on Twitter since January.

“We’ve been looking forward to this day, and we’re excited to get the app into your hands,” wrote Android engineer Sara Haider in a blog post.

In addition to posting on Twitter, Vine members can use the app to discover other people’s videos and invite their friends to join. Until now, Android users have been unable to accept those invitations.

Vine currently has 13 million registered users who post an estimated five videos per second.

Much like the iOS version, the video creation tool for Android will have an automatic playback feature and sound.  But Android users will have something that iOS users don’t: a zoom tool.

In addition to fixing bugs and improving performance, Twitter also plans to improve the app with a front-facing camera, Twitter-style features like search, mentions, and hashtags; and the ability for users to share their videos to Facebook. The company has been working on updating the iOS app while building the Android version.

“As a result, the two apps are not perfectly in sync, but that won’t be the case for long,” Haider said.
