UEFA Champions League Final Wins Big on Social Media [Infographic]

Soccer fans worldwide tuned in over the week of May 14th to 19th to watch the UEFA Champions league finals play out, and they didn’t just win with an estimated TV audience of 150 million viewers — they won on Facebook, YouTube, Google+, Twitter and Foursquare as well.  The games were a fantastic success, and viewers were able to connect with one another over social media the entire time.  The world of social TV is just around the corner, and stats like the ones in the infographic below prove we are in the beginning stages of the phenomenon.

Live sports is definitely one of the best places for social TV and augmented viewing applications.  Being able to connect with the world at large as your favorite team scores a goal is probably a thrill for those that can’t watch directly with friends.  Looking at the statistics in the infographic below, which was provided by UEFA themselves, we can see that there were 2.5 million likes and 125,000 conversations on Facebook about the games, as well as 4.8 million tweets about the games.  Those are massive numbers, and also show that Twitter isn’t going anywhere — it’s like a global chat room.
