The iPads will replace the estimated 16 million sheets of paper printed each year for flight crews. The weight savings (1.5 pound iPad vs. 38 pounds of paper) will save an estimated 326,000 gallons of fuel.

The iPads will be loaded with the Jeppesen Mobile FD iPad app. The app is free but requires a subscription for electronic charting. Here’s a look at how this app is used by pilots.
