Very interesting news item from the New York Times…
Bank Will Allow Customers to Deposit Checks by iPhone
I tend to think about USAA as an insurance company. But, they are a diverse financial institution with, apparently, some forward thinking in the mobile area. They already have a mobile friendly website found at…
…and a free iPhone app…
The NYT article reports that USAA’s upcoming iPhone app update will let their customers deposit a check by taking a photo of it using an iPhone. This seems like it should work fine using an iPhone 3GS which has an autofocus camera. However, I don’t know how well it works with older non-autofocus iPhone models.
USAA only has one physical bank (in San Antonio) according to the NYT. According to Wikipedia, USAA is – a Fortune 500 financial services company offering banking, investing, and insurance to people and families that serve, or served, in the United States military. It seems like a good feature for their far-flung clientele.
