Vimeo’s Cameo Hopes to Help Indie Musicians

Vimeo, which acquired the video-making app Cameo earlier this year, released a new update for the app today. The upgrade focuses on promoting artist discovery — songs that are part of the app’s catalog will be promoted throughout the app.

“Music discovery is intrinsic to the Cameo app,” Matthew Rosenberg, VP of Cameo, said in a statement. “Now that we’re part of the Vimeo family we’ve been able to focus solely on building out the areas that differentiate Cameo in the video app creation space, including music integration.”

The app’s new music interface includes a redesigned browser with the ability to sort by genre and preview tracks.

While Cameo came under criticism when it stopped allowing users to use their own music, Rosenberg told Gigaom: “Many emerging artists have been victim to pirating on other mobile video platforms, and our goal is to develop relationships with these artists and get them the exposure they need to be successful.”

In addition to the new music experience, other updates include:

  • Vimeo integration: Sign in to Cameo with Vimeo credentials, and easily share videos to Vimeo
  • Email recap: The option to automatically receive an email with quick links once a video is published
  • Cameo badges: To distinguish featured users

The app is currently only available on iOS. Download it here.
